Help me build a 1990 De Rosa Pro
I have been holding off for awhile in starting this thread. The expectation is that it will take some time before the build is done. This is the basics.
Purchased this frame set from squirtdad a couple of months ago. There is a history of BF ownership that I am not fully aware of. In any case, a De Rosa was on my N+1 list and this really fills the bill. I don't have an envious collection like some but a reasonable price for a quality machine works for me, aesthetics aside. All my bike show previous ownership at this point.
I have been debating what approach to take. Campagnolo was a natural for an Italian frameset. 9V on up would work for me. The 8V Pinarello works well for me but one or two more sprockets might help if they are in the combination. My thoughts were gravitating to 10-V.
I would like this bike to look good. The paint is a beautiful red that pictures just don't capture.

A couple of weeks ago, a pair of Campagnolo hubed wheels showed up for under $150 with Ambrosia rims and Record hubs with a Campagnolo 10V block. Couldn't turn it down. They have black spokes and nipples with the exception of two red spokes on either side of the valves. Now I am gravitating toward black to go with the wheels. A 10V record crank is already in the parts bin along with the BB. A black HB is also in the bin. I think there is a black Brooks too. The black Flite is on the Pinny, but that can change as I have a white Flite too.
So would it be too stange to have black wheels with white saddle and bar tape along with polished drive train? I am thinking of the Carbon TI RD too that would mix the polish and black.
Here is how it is thrown together at the moment. Saddle is too high and white under the cover.

Oh and if anyone has a 10v Campagnolo Record Ti drive train set to offer, I am interested! Will need brake calipers and Ergos too.
In the mean time, I am thinking of putting Superbe Pro on there just to ride it.

it was raced in Minnesota for four years and then used on a trainer for many years until I got my mitts on it.
originally a Flanders bikes and built with 7400. I eventually rebuilt it with 10 speed Chorus until I retired it to a hook.
most of the parts ended up on my Della Santa which had the correct st measurement for me.
it’s a neat frame set and you’ll love the ride.

gomango Thanks for the background! I am anxious to ride it. I tried to mount a RD yesterday and the bolt only rotated about 1 1/2 turns. I need to check it out more thoroughly.
Chased it out with a longer bolt. Threads don't look great but good enough.

I will reserve final judgement until after it's done... but I cannot see all black working well here. (Saddle is OK.)
All black components will make the red paint seem even more dull, and the whole bike will suffer. Black as an accent color (the wheels, the saddle, maybe pedals) works well; as a main color, it can work if you are "murdering-out" the whole bike and it's perfect, or it's a stark contrast to the frame (white or silver frame). But that's not what we have here, it's a beautiful red frame with white decals and chrome socks (chrome forks would be sweet). Too much black, and it brings the red frame down.
White bar tape and grey (or white) cable housing will make the red and white decals of the frame "pop".
All my opinion of course, it's your bike and do what YOU like! Gorgeous frame.

Also, tan sidewalls (Vittoria Corsa G+) would look hot here. Tan and red is classy.

I built up my go-fast bike with Campagnolo Veloce shifters and derailleurs. They were inexpensive and work as well as anything I've ever used. I'm very impressed with this stuff.

How I built mine . I built it to ride, and boy did it !
I wanted mine to be the equivalent of a modern "Superbike" for my uses ---- This wont be most DeRosa fan's favorite build , but I used a rock solid Thomson stem and 31.8 wide cyclocross style bars (my favorite bend ) ---- IT stiffened up the front end considerably over a traditional Cinelli setup, as well as gave me the shallow drop bars I was wanting
I used Veloce shifters just like Tom's preference (@noglider) and makes for a nice modern feeling transition from the bar tops ------ The rest of the build is from a couple different groups and eras but the parts selection worked great and sorta' makes sense ---
Crankset is a sorta rare compact chainring double , but made for a square taper spindle . Carbon 10 speed RDR and a set of very nice NOS mid 90's Chorus brakes I found --- the anodized silver low profile wheels give me vintage looks with modern gears and the GP4000 tires are pretty racy too
-- and why a ghastly zero setback Thomson post ? -- well, it matches the stem, but also puts me in a real aggressive forward position that I like.
Folks, this thing handles as well as my '17 model S Works Tarmac set up like this.
I've since sold the frame , because I really love the Colnago I got from another forum member better ----(and I got an offer I couldn't refuse on the frameset )
I realize my build looks almost blasphemous to traditionalists, so i'll post a pic of its replacement to assure you I haven't gone completely crazy ------ even still , I put some wide shallow drop Nittos on it, but that's because I intend to put miles on it and want it comfy for me -- and these bars are a great idea for anybody who cant deal with traditional deep drop long reach bars anymore for whatever reason

ridelikeaturtle Went back out and looked at the bike. I agree. Too much black would be.... too much. The wheels and pedals go well and make the frame stand out. The machined surface fits with the polish and chrome. The two red spokes nearly match the frame.
I loaded up Superbe Pro derailleurs, which helped me envision the all polished look. I also took off the cover of the white saddle. I am now thinking white saddle, bar tape and cable housings.
I need a 100mm stem. The Cinelli 1r is broken. Was glued once before so I don't know what I will do with it given the cost of the parts on ebay. Stem prices have gone crazy. With the newly introduced 1A, the prices of vintage ones have not increased! Plus finding a 100 is not easy either.
I will have time next week to work on it some more. If there is any significant changes, I will update.
Oh and once the Continentals wear out, Vittoria Corsa G+ without a doubt. The Pinarello has the clincher version which are outstanding.

I had corsa G+ 28 on and the ride/handling was fantastic.......but i had flat issues: 6 flats in 600 miles, I switched to GP5000 and no flats in 400 miles (though I just jinxed it) ymmv

Like DMC707 , I selected a chain that is bling and black. I thought I had a good 10 speed chain. Must have put it on the PInarello. I ordered a KMC X10 which arrived today. Here it is installed:

I am having a hard time spending the south side of a Benjamin for a used FD to match the RD. I might get over it after awhile. Likely it will be the need to just have it! The Superbe Pro might be a good temporary solution.
The next two similar challenges are the Ergo's and calipers.
Although I have a nice American Classic post, I could use it on one of the Treks, either the 610 or 760 with Superbe Pro.

Black seatpost & stem..bars wrapped in black,housing matching the gold in the Columbus tube label and bling it with whatever colour you like in the chainring bolts and such..that is a very sweet build you have going....J

Pretty sweet build. Looks a lot like my De Rosa. Mine has a mix of old and new Campagnolo Record and Chorus. Drive train, rear hub, and brakes are modern, 9s Chorus. Then I went with C-record post, headset and front hub, and some vintage black bits (Flite saddle, TA cages, LOOK pedals, and Silca pump) to help tie it all together.

The black stem and white tape with black saddle works surprisingly well. I have the saddle but not the stem.

@SJX426, the handlebars are Modolo Professional - Anatomica Design. IIRC, these were introduce in the late 80s. They have traditional shape to them, except for the the flattened out section in the drops. My hands like 'em. Similar Modolo bars often come with a screened logo, but these have a nice engraved logo instead.
