Gen 3 or Gen 4 Santana Disc Brake Rotor
I am in the process of pulling together a wheelset for my 2016 Santana Team Ti-700. The wheels are Spinergy PBOs and I plan to stick with the 10 speed 11-36 cassette. My question is which Santana Disc Brake Rotor should I use. I see on the Santana website they are selling a Gen 3 stainless steel 10" rotor and a Gen 4 Stainless steel and aluminum 10" rotor. The Gen 4 rotor is almost double the cost of the Gen 3. Is the Gen 4 worth the additional cost?

I have bought several items for my 1998 Arriva directly from Santana. I have found the person that answers the phone for Santana is very helpful and open. I expect he'll give you excellent answers. I would call Santana and ask directly. 800-334-6136

This spring I upgraded our Santana Sovereign from the Gen 3 to the Gen 4 rotor. Both are 10” rotors and provide great braking. The Gen 4 rotor is slightly lighter and has a higher heat capacity. For me, however, what really made it worthwhile was the silence of the Gen 4. The Gen 3 rotor, probably because it’s a one-piece design in such a large diameter, would “sing” or “ring” with every bump in the road. It was a very musical tone, but annoying nonetheless!

I talked with Jack Goertz at Tandems Limited, he had a Gen 3 and Gen 4 in his shop. He strongly recommended I purchase the Gen 4 and place it on my primarily rear wheel. Just like you, he said it was slightly lighter, but the big benefit was the two piece design that makes the rotor much quieter on the road. I ordered the Gen 4 from Jack and have taken two rides with it for 70 miles. With no break in at all the rotor has performed perfectly, smooth stops, no brake noise and no rattles. While the rotor was expensive, it does seem to be a significant upgrade.

Jack's Gen 3 mod to reduce the noise was to bolt a 140 or 160mm rotor on the outside of the big rotor to stiffen it. Bolts are usually long enough that
this is not a problem and it helped a lot.
