Nicky Hayden dies after being hit while bicycling

All those incredibly risky motorcycle races and he gets killed by a driver while relaxing on a bicycle.

I'm effing gutted. So tragic. Nicky was the most humble World Champions in the history of sport. Never had a bad word about anyone.

I followed his entire career and will never forget this moment...

RIP Kid

Sad, and illustrates how the safety measures implemented in racing have far outpaced the safety measures implemented in our infrastructure in the general public over the past couple decades.

Given that we have little to no idea what transpired I am not sure how you have come to that conclusion.

Because over the past decade, decade and a half, the various racing sanctioning bodies have taken a very progressive stance towards researching and implementing safety measures. With the exception of focusing on DUIs, the same cannot really be said about roadways in the general public. Sure, we may ruin a "shared lane" campaign for a few months here, or install some high viz lights at a road crossing there, maybe toss out a multi-modal transport study elsewhere but there is really no concerted effort to protect all users of the road.

EDIT: also what @San Rensho said below, that is where I was originally going.

I think its really simple. Hayden and most moto racers fall off all the time going very fast on the track and rarely even suffer orthopedic injuries.

But someone who is riding a bicycle is in much more danger of being killed than a moto racer.

The trend towards autonomous cars is, in my opinion, one of the best things that could possibly happen as a measure to protect all roadway users. No campaign is going to prevent people from having a moment of inattention while driving, and unfortunately that's all it takes. A computer, while not infallible, at least won't decide to try and pick up what the child in the backseat dropped. A computer can also react a lot quicker to the occasional boneheaded cyclist move.

It is far easier to control safety on a race track than a public road. It's far easier to do the same on an expressway than your typical city street even.

I'm not saying more can't be done but the typical types of basic 'safety' measures tossed out for cyclists and pedestrians simply aren't the solution as they still rely heavily on the driver of the motor vehicle.

Can we all please take a few moments to honor a true modern sports hero before we go off arguing about motorcycles vs bicycles and public safety policy.

The man didn't take dope and didn't grab the rear end of the flower girl at the podium like modern bicycle racers, never had a bad word to say about anyone even when they deserved more than bad words, played hurt and didn't complain, was always grateful and thanked his crew for the win... the kind of guy your kids could look up to.

The world has lost a true great.
Now he belongs to the ages.

Aye, Tim, autonomous cars have no place in this tribute.

I agree.

Sad about that rider being killed. The last year has been the worst I can remember for cyclists being killed by cars. Here in Portland alone I saw at least one a month killed last year. Really sucks.

This is why I do everything I can to ride on every sidewalk I can ride on even when I don't want to.

It's not the culture of the sport that needs to be changed, it's the safety of the sport. Riding on the road is taking your life in your hands, it's something we just accept every time we throw a leg over.

Oh crap, I just learned of his getting killed here. My son and I met him at a short track race back in 2003, he was the nicest, most approachable of the pros in attendance there. Nicky noticed that John was working as a mechanic for a woman racer, and friend of our family, that day, and that he was only 15 Y.O. at the time. He took time to chat with John and encourage his passion for motorcycle racing and mechanics.

He was a great spokesman and ambassador for motorcycling, and pretty good cyclist as well.

Godspeed Nicky, RIP. I hope the AMA will retire the #69 for Pro level racing now, JMHO.

Here is a link to a news piece on his passing, in hospital in Cessna, Italy. His mom and his fiancé were by his side at the time of his death:

Having grown up in Ky, and spent my time racing motorcycles, I am a huge Nicky Hayden fan.

Very sad to see this go this way.

There are reports of a security camera recording that shows the accident was likely his fault. So also feel compassion for the driver who was involved, as it will scar his psyche as well.

Godspeed Nicky.

Thanks to everyone for keeping this a thread about a fallen champion. Never good to lose anyone ... but this guy was a good person and a talented person and he didn't waste or abuse it.
