Why would anybody employ a road bicycle for transport?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If not a road bike, what sort of bike? Perhaps an exercise bike?

I'm not sure what we should be discussing here. I'm a poor simple white person living in a small one bedroom apartment. Barely have room for the two bikes I have. One is a road bike, the other a mountain bike. I prefer to ride the road bike to work. Would like a commuter bike but have no place to store it.

Because I only have the room and funds for one bike and don't want a hybrid...? I don't understand the question...

I'm too stupid to understand the question. Are you asking why anyone would use a bike to get around?

No car, for exercise, to make a living, for recreation, got a DUI, because you live in Bombay.

I have one touring bike with disk brakes that I use in winter, as for the rest - my Specialized Tarmac gets me everywhere. It is a very nice, comfy and fun to ride bike and I have 0 intention in getting third bike as a commuter

I think pcad meant: why would anybody employ transport for a road bike?

Hellish heat, flat tires, mudslides, riots, foot fungus, forgotten marriage anniversary, pcad would never accept the services of a sag wagon.

But as for the topic, truth is that only a small percentage of my cycling mileage is for necessary transportation (i.e., an alternative to driving the car).

Why not?

Duh.

Oh, unless you mean carrying a hundred pounds of gear across the continent... but then what's the definition of "road bicycle"?

Okay, how about: because it affords me the opportunity to display my unusual circumcision scar to everyone in the market while clacky-clack-clacking to the back corner of the store where the bottled water is displayed... ?

Speed. I do most of my commuting on a Rans Fusion semi-'bent. But I got a Topeak beam rack with the side plates just so I could ride the roadie to work now and then. I actually hang a laptop pannier on it, and although it's "back-heavy", it's def. faster, esp. climbing Capitol hill, than the Rans. "Just to have another option" is reason enough.

Because I happen to get back and forth to my place of employment on roads? And the best way to get from my house to places that I shop happen to be on roads? And now for the truth: Maybe because my MTB that I rode into the ground and had virtually everything on it ready to fall apart and was so decrepit that I left it outside my house unlocked was eventually stolen so I had to employ my mid-1980's Cannondale road/race bike as my commuter?

At least I bought a cheap set of clincher wheels and retired my Campy Record/GP4 tubular set when I started commuting on it. I pull them out about once per year just for old time's sake along with the Detto shoes.

Simple: because I like to. I don't set my road bikes any differently for commuting because it's not as if I'm riding through the jungles of Papau New Guinea, the route is all paved roads and nice ones at that. This way I can make my commutes into training sessions rather than just "point A to point B" riding.
