Stem Question

Guys,
I have a 90mm x8 degree stem on my Serotta and I want to try a 100mm stem. BUT don't want to increase the stem height. Lengthening the stem effectively raises the stem, correct?

So what's my best approach? I don't need the stem higher, just longer.

Thanks!

17 degree stems are designed to be near horizontal for road bike typical head tube geometry. So changing to a longer stem would remain constant in height. If you like the slight upward rise of your 8 degree stem, and you want a longer one but no higher - you may have to play around with longer stems of slightly different angles.

Which direction is your 8 degree stem facing -upward or downward? A picture would be helpful here.

Not a math major, but doesn't seem that 10mm diff with an 8 degree slope would be noticeable. That being said, at Jenson, saw several 100mm stems with 6 degree rise.

The simplest thing would be to take out a spacer, if you have one.

+1 That will stretch you out, as will the longer stem. Cheap and quick to see how you like it.

Thanks guys, good info. I'm not too concerned about the "looks" but I just don't want to sit up any higher that already am. How can I make believe I'm in the TDF if I'm sitting up like a tourist??

Or use a compass and graph paper and draw the angle of your stem extending out it's length. Then use a longer line to determine what angle the new stem needs to be to get the same height.

I plugged your numbers in this tool and the 100mm stem is only 2mm higher. You could eliminate that difference with thinner bar tape.

Caloso, now we're talking. Thanks for doing the math for me and I'm thinking if I replace my current bar tape with Saran Wrap...that ought do it! UDAMAN!

Thanks guys and Merry Christmas.
