I unearthed a 93 Stumpjumper that was buried in my garage and it needs a fork.
I bought it used for parts and it had a suspension fork on it at the time but I do not know if it was original to the bike. I would like to put a rigid fork on it but I am not sure if I need a suspension corrected fork or not.
Does anybody know what kind of fork I will need?
It has a 1" head tube so that may narrow things down a bit.

Budzos, you have the same exact Stumpy as mine, down to the color. I have both the original rigid fork and Rockshox. FYI the original fork is threadless. Here's my rigid fork along with the bike. If you need any measurements of the fork, let me know. Looks like we have the same size frame too.

Unknown, I removed the fork about 15 years ago and tossed it.
I had bought the bike for the cranks and bottom bracket for cheap and it sat in my garage for
the last 15 years until recently when I was looking for a set of XTR M900 wheels.

Mine is a 18 inch frame. Somebody has drilled a hole in the rear canti hangar to rig up a set of v brakes but other than that it is in good shape. If you have access to an old mtb fork (pre suspension era) could you possibly see if there are any obvious differences? Thanks for the reply, now I at least know they are still out there.

Are you talking about comparing my stock rigid fork to an older mtb fork? If so, the oldest mtb's I have are 1987 era and there isn't much difference in the forks other than the rake of the older ones is more "forward".

I guess I was hoping for you to compare it to another fork that looks the same so I know what to look
for as a replacement. There is supposedly a surly 1x1 fork that may work but?
Kinda grasping at straws currently but this was a garage find so if nothing turns up
I will just sell it off or trade it for something else.

All the Surly 1x1 forks I see are 1 1/8" threadless and you need 1," so it won't work. And the new ones have only disc brake mounts.

Thanks for the info Clang, not what I was hoping to hear. I do have a 16.5 inch Trek 950 here that I may strip for parts and it has a rigid fork. Its a Tange Big Fork though and it will not match very well with the oversize tubing of the fork if it works at all. I have an Ebay search page for my home page currently hoping that a stumpy fork will turn up......

I'm not sure how original you're wanting, but the basic 1" threadless Dimension fork is visually a pretty close match to the original, and is easily ordered.

Suggest to google Sunlite atb fork. All sorts of seller entities out there. Chrome, threaded, unicrown type 26in wheel will cost approx $30.

I lucked out for an oddball Tange, chrome, cast crown, N.O.S. for $10 at a bike swap meet. The crazy thing it had a BMX sized threading. Probably why no one purchased it. With some fun rummaging at a LBS, I made up a decent mishmash headset.

I rode my 90s Stumpjumper road drop today. Off road single track technical and road tarmac. These bikes are bargains. Riding on German fine Continental slicks. Good enough.

My only issue is the suspension corrected thing. As long as fork has the right geometry its an option.
I don't want the bike to steer weird because the fork is not short/long/offset enough etc.

My guess is the "correction" would make up for the increased blade length of the suspension fork. I've got a '92 Specialized Crossroads fork around here somewhere in your color that I'd sell for $35 shipped. Since the Crossroads came with 29er/700c wheels & tires, the fork blades are longer than those made for 26" wheels. That may be just the ticket for giving you something close to the correct geometry. PM me if you're interested.

EDIT: Just remembered the canti bosses wouldn't line up with your 26" rims. Of course, you could use 29" wheels & tires up front and 26" in back, but you may not want that dirt bike look.

What suspension? The bike originally had a rigid fork.

Thanks for all the input everybody. It looks like what I need to find out is the Axle to Crown Length of the original rigid fork.
It seems that the Stumpjumper frameset was designed around having a suspended fork. The rigid fork version of the bike has a suspension corrected
fork so that both frames are the same. I am not 100% sure of this but the Axle to Crown Length of the original rigid fork should give me the dimensions
I need to find a workable fork. I am thinking that I will need an axle to crown length of 415-420mm but thats a guess at best.

Now I just have to measure a few forks to see what will work.

A fellow member here by the handle of UDFA has helped me out immensely with a exact match of the original fork right down to the color.
The odds of me finding one otherwise are pretty low. A big thank you goes out to UDFA and the forum here for bringing the right people together
here to make this happen. I know that I will be watching to see if I can return the favor down the road with what resources I have available
because I know first hand how it feels.
