Salsa Journeyman Apex or Surly Long Haul Trucker
Greetings...
I am purchasing my first all road/light touring/gravel bike withing the next two weeks. I've always wanted a LHT /Disc trucker but the journeyman looks like a great bike and comes in the 650b wheel size. They both fall into the $1500 range.. I will also use the bike around town for errands etc. Does anyone have experience with these bikes or other options I should consider. My current bikes include a Cannondale synapse and a Salsa Mukluk. I really do value your opinions and expertise.

LHT rides better loaded than empty, but I still us mine for around town. And it's not a light touring bike, either literally and figuratively. It's designed for "heavy" touring. Some other questions you have to ask yourself are bar ends, 1x and pink.

As seen, not owned..
A vs B ?
A is 1 by B is a triple crank ,
but you don't have to leave it as it comes out of the shipping carton,
After the shop assembles it,, feel free to change things...
to personalize your bike to suit you..
I'm at the end of many east->west tours, and along the popular Pacific Coast route .
Salsa Marrakesh and Surly LHT are a popular choice..

From my understanding, the LHT is more of a full on touring bike. I'd think the journeyman would fit your needs better between the two as you specify "all road / light touring / gravel".
I have no experience with Surly, but the Straggler or Midnight Special may be a better comparison to the journeyman. Of course, the Surlys are CroMoly while the journeyman is aluminium.

noodly appendage
Another bike to consider might be the Soma Doublecross Disc. Never tried it for light touring but for road and gravel it's great and can take 650 wheels without issue.

Journeyman. It’s a better “all around” bike. From what you’ described it sounds like a bike offering the most versatility would be best. IMO, the LHT leans too far toward the touring side. I’m not a big fan of aluminum frames because of the typical aluminum ride quality, but with those fat 650s at low PSI, you’ll get a great ride. The Journeyman will handle better than the LHT in everyday use. If you were planning on loading out for a transcontinental tour I’d say LHT, but you could even do that with the Journeyman, really.

I had a Disc Trucker and loved it. Only reason I don't have it anymore is a upgraded to a Co-Motion Cascadia frame and built it my way. Yes it is a loaded touring bike but I rode it unloaded plenty and it wasn't a bad ride at all though it does do better fully loaded.
Steel is a nice comfortable durable frame material and most of my bikes are made from that wonderful material.
