Touring - adding 3rd chainring (granny gear)
hey all,
new to touring, and to all-city. I love the fit of the space horse, but want to use it for long-distance, loaded touring. What are your thoughts on:
Appreciate your help!

- How well suited is the frame for bearing loads of 30-50lbs?
- Have any of you tried adding a 3rd chainring (granny gear)? Do the components support doing that?
Appreciate your help!

2) No. You would need to figure out something else, any way you go though you're looking at replacing a sizeable amount of components to get lower gearing.

I like the bike: excellent geometry, practical details, nice paint, reasonable price. All City makes a lot of stuff I like.
One issue (not a deal killer, but still): QR on a disc bike in 2018? QBP seems to be allergic to thru axles on their steel bikes. I don't get it. QR works fine, but aligning a disc on a thru axle bike is simply much easier.

I'd rather have the Cipollini.

2. Dunno, but another poster says "no." You can always ask All City right on the SHD page Q&A section, and they will probably respond.

I don't plan on doing any touring, but I absolutely love my Space Horse Disc. I also have a Domane Disc Gravel, which admittedly I picked up for road duty, but I pick the Space Horse more times than not when I go for a ride. As much as I like thru-axles, I have had no problems with rotor alignment on this or my old Macho Man disc, but other QR disc bikes were a nightmare to deal with. I've also found that All-City and QBP have been very responsive to my emails, so I'm sure they could let you know what options if any would be available for adding a triple.

This is becoming a crowded market segment in the QBP stable. Plus, compared to the others (Surly/Salsa), All City bikes have always had at least one design element that is "off", somehow.
With enough time to look at this one, I'm sure I'll find it.
