Last year at this time I refurbished a beautiful '79 710 that was complete with all its original components. As a 24" frame it was too small for me and I reluctantly passed it on to another Trek enthusiast to enjoy.

Early December I found a 25-1/2" 310 in the C&V craigslist thread on BF. The 310 was never really offered in the catalog but many are known to exist. Basically it's similar to the earlier TX300 with the same pressed fork crown and built with butted Ishiwata Hi-ten tubing.

This particular 310 was well loved (and treated like a high-end bike) by a couple of owners before me. Has lots of patina but no dents or rust. I wet-sanded and polished the frame before touching up the paint chips by hand with a custom mix based on an old BMW touch-up tube. Used a rust inhibitor on the inside of the frame.

I changed the bar and stem to Nitto Technomic and B135 Randonneur to give my old back a fighting chance. Other than a NOS Brooks Pro, cables, housing and a new chain all other components came with the bike. Everything was throughly cleaned, polished and serviced.
Will wrap the bar after I get a chance to test ride it.

Campagnolo Nuovo Record Pat. 76 derailleurs, shifters, cable guide (NOS) and seat post.
Ofmega Super Competizione crankset, Suntour 13-26 6 speed freewheel, Edco cartridge bearing bottom bracket.
Performance sealed bearing (cartridge) hubs (Suntour Cyclone?) laced to Mavic MA2 36h rims with DT double butted spokes. (replaced tubulars 20 years ago)
Diacompe 500 brakes and drilled levers. (new hoods) Scott Mathauser pads. (re-surfaced but still soft) New Diacompe brake cable guides.
Barelli B-25 pedals (NOS V-O half clips)
Shimano 600 EX headset
Tires are NOS ebay specials. Placeholders until I decide on permanent ones.
Added accessories: Vintage Berthoud bag, Zefal HP pump, REG umbrella clip, REG bottle cage, (curved bottom) New V-O cage clamps.

My 610 was posted back on post 351!

So now I get to add the 760 recently built up to test ride to determine its fate. Rattle canned by an earlier owner. It was a project with a Giant unicorn fork. Those who know me, have seen this before but I like to post pics and communicate in my own way.

Just a year newer. The bike came with a Giant unicrown. This fork has a long story but at least it is the right one and no different than the 84, except the color.

1980something Trek roadie. I loved the hidden cables. I built it up from a frameset.
-I gave it to an unemployed chum back in the 2007 recession. That allowed me to hoard more mountain bikes.
-The Trek I wanted most was the STP 300 softail mountain bike. Now that I can afford one, I am a bit too old for aggressive trail riding

I wouldn't want your '79 510 to feel lonely. It is a fine riding frame with a full Ishiwata frame and a cast crown. The low temp silver brazed Treks are great bikes.

Ok, everyone, as promised, my 1979 Trek 510! Triple rare in form, IMO: 1) a 510 from 1979 +/- 2) 25.5" size 3) Chestnut color, which is gorgeous. Fully double butted Ishiwata 022 tubing, with a frame/fork/headset weight of just 3,210g for what is a touring-spec bike (44.5cm chainstays, good tire/fender clearance, etc). 300g less than my Paramount, Expedition, and Trek 620 touring bikes which were all in the 3,500g range for the frame/fork/headset. The color glows, the smooth-and-lovely components glow, it's just sublime to see, especially in the sun. Many a used component, but still not a two dollar build here.

I want to show you it in it's "ideal beauty" form as it will have several things changed out today. The tires were never meant to be 25mm Vittorias, but I transferred the wheels from the Medici and said "let's give them a chance." They don't even look too out of place on it! The Imperial saddle is much too narrow for me in comparison to a B17. It's basically a hatchet right now that is ruining the riding and operating experience. So I'll swap to a Prologo saddle of mine to cut down on the "distraction" so as to be able to focus on the finer points of the bike's character. The Superbe Pro shifters are gorgeous, and sooooo smooth to shift, but the left/front lever, which is already at near-max tight, doesn't hold the big ring position (with the newer, stronger-springed 105 FD) under out of saddle efforts. Heart-breaking! So I'll put on my 7900 Dura-Ace 10-speed shifters to remedy that. I'll also swap my 33mm Somas onto the bike to see if I can get some more play into it. It's not super excited to rock back and forth out of the saddle like my 620. The more I remember about the ones I've had, the more this strikes me as a early Trek thing. It's great in the saddle for sure, but hopefully my initial changes can "clear the static" so I can really get to know this 510. I can't stop looking at it!
