Colnago Super Fake or Real?
Hi,
I had the wonderful chance to buy this bike and I was wondering if this is a fake or real colnago? This is my first colnago bike so I'm not entirely familiar with it.
It looks like it's the real deal to me after checking several forum pages and reading up on colnago super frames but I'd like to get a second opinion

Thank you in advance!

Sorry the forum didn't show your post because you aren't allowed to post links in your first 10 posts. The listing ended, did you buy it?

Yeah, it would be really weird to have all those panto'd parts on a fake. But the frame looks genuine too, and the fake decals you can easily get aren't like that

Yes! I ended up getting it I'm just glad to hear that this is real...
I've been seeing so many fake pinarellos lately and I recently came across some posts here saying that their colnagos might be fake so I got all worried.
Thank you for the help!
I hope this was a worthy investment... I'm not sure what the market value of this bike would be worth even. Anyone have a clue?

If you bought it at auction, I would think that's pretty much establishing market value.

That's a pretty desirable seatpost on a pretty desirable bike with pretty desirable components. What's it worth? Now there's an interesting question. It really depends on how much you really want it and how much the seller thinks it's worth - as you now doubt know. All I can say is that it had a price tag of $2000 to $2500 I'd be interested in it.
You don't state how much you paid for it but it seems that you are now confident that you got a worthy investment

What makes this seatpost desirable?

not all bikes are “matchie match “
to me, frame appears in decent shape, decent pantograph assortment. Close to same year era.

I’ve had genuine Colnagos with 2 and 3 toptube cable guides.

Things throwing me off:
- three cable guides on top tube
- braze on fd
- no "Colnago" stamped in chainstay ( which i would think something that late/with a braze on fd would/should have?)
- fluting on the (two bolt) seatpost doesn't look like Campagnolo fluting, rather rounded at bottoms, looks like flutes go too high.
- straight skewers on hubs, too early for the frame?
- crank date stamp in a diamond (ended in '79?), too early for the frame?
Plenty of replicated fluted posts and pantographed components are out there, Colnago branded items being one of them.
The clamp area of the stem has a huge gap. That bugs me.
Pedals don't look like Campagnolo to me.
I am not an expert, but these things are making me say hmm. Looks like older and newer parts assembled onto the frame to me.

I may be wrong due to the photo but it looks to be an original Super Record post and a little rare. It has the flutes cut into the post as opposed to a plain Nuovo Record post. There are a lot of plain Nuovo Record posts that have had the flutes milled along the tube length by a second party.

^^^^Yea, I love mine and they are great to ride. I am not a pro rider or anything but I do have a few top drawer classics in my humble collection and my Super is at least as good as any of them , better in some respect. I usually don’t grade them but rather notice subtle differences in the way they ride. I certainly have favorites and this one is tops but I like my others too.

The expected seat post would be something like this:
Not cheap to acquire

Well I was gonna say for sure a repaint, then I see that has already been established. OP, no doubt that’s a real Colnago and I think you will enjoy that bike. It’s a very cool machine! As far as dating/ identification, it looks to be no earlier than 1983-84 to me. A Super has a linear crimp along the inner chainstay. I’m not sure I see one on yours, but pretty sure I see wheel/crank crimp which is not feature of an early 80’s Super and not sure if it is found on later versions.

It is hard to deny it is a Colnago. the Seat stay caps are fluted with the Panto Colnago, not an easy thing to replicate. Wasn't fluted cap changed to flat in 83ish time frame? The SR RD is Pat 83 on mine.

Aren't there a bunch of unsubstantiated rumors of reproductions of these, amongst other caps, produced in one of the countries in Central America? 15+ years and I'm still waiting for someone to bring in some concrete information about that...

I think the caps were cast that way, not panto'd. The flat plates on trek seat stays were stamped. It's not that easy to fake such things, but I guess if it was actually machined instead of cast that would be a clue that it was fake. If someone could adequately fake a Colnago frame it would be a shame they didn't just make something under their own name. Usually fakes are somewhat crude, so that gives it away.
