Oh man, the Prairie Path. My first cycling adventure was on that path. My two buddies and I. Eighth grade, 1972. A Mercier, a Dawes Galaxy, and me on my Raleigh Sports 3 speed. And we too ended up in Wheaton having started in Elmhurst. Our ride was in late March so didn't encounter what the group in this article did. Though there were many times we were searching for the path as it sort of ended in a parking lot, then started up again a few blocks away. Great memories.

Thank you for posting this! I was a UCLA physics undergrad, Earth Action Council (UCLA bicycling advocacy group) member, and Bicycling magazine subscriber at the time, still riding my low-end 1962 Bianchi Corsa road bike. Nine months later I would buy the American Eagle Semi-Pro and give the Bianchi to my girlfriend (now wife of 47 years). Check out the 1970 prices.

I remember that issue. That was while I was still riding modified 3 spd. bikes, prior to getting my first 10 spd.

I'm very seriously considering paying a local custom t shirt company to make some shirts with the magazine's cover as the design. If it came to pass, would anyone else be interested?

I graduated high school in June 1970. It does not seem like yesterday. I was riding a no name balloon tired bike. Out in farm country. I graduated from the same building as my dad did in 1941, and many of my teachers spanned both generations. Times have changed somewhat.

If printed on a white shirt I think the naturally aged look of the design would be fine, but I think it would look better printed on a red shirt which then could necessitate some digital editing to clean up the fading. I'm no great shakes at photoshop or gimp, but I'll re-bump this thread down the line with the finished product. May take a bit of time.

Thanks, SpeedofLite , for these postings. I always enjoy reading them very much.
In this case especially the item on Anquetil's career. I like the way he always looked on a bike: sleek, elegant, fast. I hope to look somewhat like that when riding, but in reality the image is probably closer to the gentleman on the Schwinn. On a good day.
