New chain clicking
Hello,
I have a Nexus 7-speed hub and installed a single speed chain with a single speed master link (the one with the cir-clip.
The chain is a not expensive KMC 410.
The chain is cut correctly to length / same length and link count.
I used a chain took to remove the unwanted links.
The tension seems the same as in the right amount of play.
The chain is not touching any cables.
Issue:
Every time the master link passes over the rear sprocket it makes a slight clicking noise,
The cir-clip is facing the outside.....I will change it to facing inwards but first I want to know:.....did I by the wrong type of chain?
Did I get the wrong type of chain?
drivin me nuts,
Mike

Wrong type of chain. You need one designed for a 7 speed setup. The single speed chain may work but not very well and the clicking is probably the masterlink is just too wide no matter how you mount it. Chain info here. https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair...-compatibility
UPDATE: As pointed out by other forum members the OP noted this is an IG hub so my post here is WRONG!

Your chain is correct in that it is a single speed 1/8" chain as opposed to a multi-speed chain. It does sound like your issue is with the link. Is it a KMC link that came with the chain? If not, try a different link. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think you are safe to join a single speed chain in the traditional way, w/o a link or special pin. You could experiment with that and determine for sure if it's the link that is clicking.

Are you certain the quick link is fully set? Some are a little difficult to get locked or set fully. And might make a click as they go across the rear or front gears with incorrect spacing between the pins.
If you aren't certain, then get an accurate scale with measurments in the 64th of an inch range and measure the same edge of the two pins of the quick link or their centers and see if you have 1/2".
Digital calipers if you have them can be even easier. Especially if you understand how to use it's relative measure function.

Thank you.
Based on this and the conflicting information I did some more digging and indeed it is the 3/32" width I need.
My master link is in correctly and well 3/32" is the right width.
The local bike store...well I will find what they have to say tomorrow. Not an expensive chain but stil...

I saw your post about the Shimano Nexus chain being 1/8" x 1/2"
How I determined it was a 3/32":
1) I found and old bit of the chain and it was thinner than the new one.
2) I managed to find the brochure specs for a different 7 speed Nexus from the same manufacturer....it was 3/32"
3) I found KMC chains labelled for 6,7,8 speed geared bikes....and assumed on this one. KMC
So, again doubting myself, again....
1) I looked at other bikes and they were a mix of 1/8" and 3/32" from the 3 speed to the 7 speed.
Internet searches also led me to believe it was 3/32"
Maybe it normally doesn't matter. Maybe I can simply change the master link.....will wait to see what the local bike shop says....I am not a fan of mysteries or seemingly simple things becoming so unclear.
So far everyone is right : - )
