Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2007 Scott Speedsters - Why no CR1 fork?

I was looking at getting the '06 speedster s10 but my LBS does not have any in my size (someone beat me to buying it over the last week and the '07 model seems less impresive. Like why is the Scott Carbon CR1 Team 1 1/8" integrated Carbon steerer now just a "carbon / 1-1/8" / Alloy steerer"??

Maybe they ran out of CR1 fork graphics.

My understanding is they did downgrade the fork on the 07's. Why I don't know.
I need (ok want) the new Addict!

It is visibly different and the fact that they went from the same fork and carbon steerer from there CR1 to their older low model alloy/carbon model is big to me.

I love mine too. It was one of the major factors in helping me settle on my S20.

Mike, I think you have the alloy steerer. BUT, I'm currently looking at an S20 - how's the ride???

OP, my guess is they were trying to shave some cost so got rid of the carbon steerer and dropped back to alloy like on the S20 line from '06.

Either that or they were trying to encourage people to upgrade to the full carbon frame to get the carbon steerer also.

My bad...I just reread the OP. I do have the alloy steerer. The bike rides great. Very responsive and light. The 105 gruppo seems excellent to me, so no problems there. Compared to my previous ride (Felt F90), the ride is super smooth due to the carbon stays. The only issue I have about it, is the WH-R550 wheelset. The rear spokes make a weird pinging sound on steep climbs. It could be a tensioning issue though. Other than that I think it's a fine bike.

I just looked at the Scott site. Seems the S20s come with a compact crank now and without the CR1 fork?

Hope this helps,
Mike

The 2006 S20 has a carbon steerer, at least in Canada. And the 06 model weighs 1.1 lbs. less than the 07. I have an S20 and it is an excellent bike. You don't hear a lot about Scott alloy bikes because they're not marketed at all- only one shop carries them where I live.

The wheels seem to be a weak point on the stock Scotts. I've seen others with problems including one that had a mechanic scratching his head for days. I think he ended up completely rebuilding the wheels. I built mine up from frame only and it has Ultegra/Open Pro wheels. They're very solid.

I wonder how a CR1 fork would be on a CAAD8 frame...
I am looking at the Speedster and the CAAD8 frames for my buildup using insurance money from getting hit!

The profile on those forks look very similar to the all carbon HP Pro forks made by Real Design:

Maybe your shop can get you a 06 from Scott still? I know my shop is offering me what I consider a great deal on a 06 CR1 SL in a size they would have to order. Just an idea?!

However the carbon weave between the two forks is incredibly different, so its not just a rebaged push-over from scott, if that is what you are implying.

I just built up a CR1 Team Issue recently and the fork is fantastic. Apart from the fact that it looks sweet in both shape and weave pattern, it dampens road vibration very well. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I've seen the Real Design fork in person and it is a different fork. Besides, the one in the pic has an aluminum steerer. I think all CR1 forks are all carbon? I know mine is.
