My 2016 Masi CXGR came with Weinman wheels that keep breaking spokes. The LBS people are telling me that the wheels are cheap and that the repaired and retensioned wheels are not perfectly true and will likely keep breaking spokes. Though I like the bike very much, it's hardly a lightweight performance rig, and so I don't envision spending a huge amount on wheels. I'm relatively new to gravel riding and more familiar with road wheels, so I'd like some advice.

Some considerations

1. Disc, of course
2. I run with 35 mm tires, but would like the option of going narrower (32) and wider (40).
3. Strong wheels with high spoke counts only (for obvious reasons).
4. I've never experimented with tuebless and I'm not really interested. I know most tubeless-ready wheels can be run with tubes, but at this point tubeless isn't a selling point.

I was sort of looking at Velocity A23s, but was wondering if mounting fatter tires on them can be tough? I have a pair on my road bike that i run with 25 mm tires, and tire mounting is a pain. Would it be the same with fatter tires?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

What is your weight?I'm about 230 lbs and the only spoke I broke in the last three years was cause by a grocery bag.I did not search the Weinman wheels for reviews,But stock wheels are usually heavy and built for abuse.

For about $600 I would go custom,local if they have good reviews.I'm not happy with my custom wheels I bought last year and they are on the other side of the states.That is why I say try local first.

For about $350 or less some good pre-built sets out there when on sale.

I'm 160# and on my road bike I seldom break spokes even on light low-spoke count wheels. The wheels are Weinmann Hydra Disc which as far as I can tell, are sold only as OEM. I think there is something defective with how they were built. Spokes have broken both time at the nipple in ways that make it look like the nipple ripped out of the rim.

Anyway, there are several local wheel builders and a couple of shops that make wheels, so local custom built may be the way to go.

I second this. Typically good bang for your buck, and you know exactly what you're getting.

Shimano XT M8000 hubs ($120USD total). H PLUS SON Hydra or Archetype rims ($160ish total). DT spokes ($70USD total). Lace 32 cross-3.


How hard tires are to mount depends on the tires. I run 40mm GravelKing SK, tubeless, and can very nearly bare hand the tires on and off.

Yeah at 160 I bet it is the wheels.Should be some decent deals this week on wheels.Maybe A recall on the Weinmann wheels?
I would also check out Riding gravel wheel forum and see what they suggest.

And Fulcrum Red Power HP 29" 6-Bolt Wheelset from CRC in UK.I need to buy one more center-lock disc.

Do not really like my PWB wheel set.Only time I had A wheel come out when riding.But they get mostly good reviews.I'm going to put them on one of my slower bikes.

And Nashbar is 25% off this weekend.Not sure what they got in gravel type wheels.

I have no experience with them, but they look good spec wise, all axle options, centerlock disc with 6bolt adaptors included and wide rims for under $500
