Tubeless conversion

Pardon me if its been asked before.
But what is the purpose of that white stuff in the wheel when doing tubeless conversion ? Just to seal in the case of punctures or is it needed to seal the bead and around the spoke sealer tape ? It almost feels to me like it may get the glue to give up.
And old wheels are fine for this ? Or it has to be a "tubeless" compatible wheel ?
And old tires are fine ? Or do I need to get "tubeless" compatible tires ?
And Can I do it to those super narrow vintage wheels that are 1" or narrower ?

Thanks.
Srinath.

Seals the bead to the rim and seals up small punctures. I'd recommend that you go with tubeless compatible rims and tyres for reliability and ease of installation but it is definitely possible to set up regular rims with tubeless tyres.

judging by your questioning, i'd say you're better off not wasting your time experimenting with tubeless
