Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Riding gloves

Hey everybody,

I need some suggestions for new gloves. I currently have a pair of specialized gloves that only have padding on the left side of the right hand (when the bottom of your hand is facing up), and I think it's almost doing more harm than good because my hands get quite sore as I have been ramping up my mileage.

Anyway, I'm wondering what gloves you all swear by. Preferably gloves with wicking or other moisture-management properties, because it's summer and it gets really hot where I live.

Thanks,

Tom

I've been pleased with Iron Man gloves.

I'd highly recommend the Adistar glove if your looking for padding (Adiprene foam) / ventilation (mesh top) / protection (leather palm)

Different people like padding in different places. Depends on how you hold the handlebar. You can't have padding everywhere or the gloves would get too thick. Personally, I like Garneau gloves.

Go for the gusto and get a pair of these. Very little padding but they somehow give as much cushioning as gloves twice as thick. I don't know how they do it but they're one of the best investments I've ever made.

I've been very happy with a pair of LG biogel air gloves I've been using for the last 2 years on my long rides. Short rides under 2 hours don't really need them, this also helps with the tan line.

my hands tend to sweat a lot, so i tried the pearl izumi gel vent gloves. i have found them to be very comfortable and cool. here's a link: https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=1140

however, what sold me on them was trying them on in the LBS. these fit much more nicely than the other options available there. it was great to be able to try on all the different small-medium-large options, with and without velcro, etc. these fit ... like a glove.

i think gloves are like shoes in that you are better off trying them on rather than ordering online (unless you know what you want).

The 'Squish' gloves from MEC are great, they have padding on the bottom and a nice wicking mesh on top. Best of all is the terry cloth patch for wiping your nose on it.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. I'll check all of the models out that were suggested and try and narrow it down to one or two pairs to see if my LBS has available for me to try on.

Thanks!

I'm a wild man .... my hands go commando. Yeah, I know, I'm totally voyeur with my naked hands, but someones got to do it!

My Velo handlebar take is padded enough. The only time I've had a "problem" was riding my fixed gear for 4 hrs on a slowish 50 mile ride (charity ride and I was chaperoning the kids), but that bike I only have cotten tape so no padding at all. My hands got a bit uncomfortable, but with padded tape I've never had a problem.

So I recommend hands gone wild personally

I have big hands and a lot of brands just don't fit. The nicest ones I've found are Louis Garneau. They don't have a lot of padding though, I find too much padding gets a bit squishy.

Perhaps my main problem is my handlebars? I am currently riding on a specialized sirrus, the lowest-end model. The gel on the bars feels like it does pretty much nothing, so maybe when I get a new bike (a real road bike) I won't have as much of a problem...

Get bar ends so you'll have more hand positions.

I have the PI Gel Lite gloves. They are very comfortable and they have a nice racy look to them. They don't seem to last terribly long though...maybe a year at best.

I can't stand not having gloves on when I ride. I feel like I have a better grip on the bar with gloves on than without and it's nice to have something to wipe my face on when I get sweaty.

I skip the gloves a lot. I've found I don't need them, even on longer rides. However, I do worry about protecting my hands if I ever crash, so I've started wearing them more recently.

+1 on the PI Gel Lite.

* All riders need hands
* Gloves help prevent catastrophic hand damage
* There is a distinct, significant and measurable aerodynamic component to gloves
* Pros are wearing the Disco/Nike glove almost exclusively

* Mesh back gloves suck aerodynamically
* Big velcro straps also suck
* Charlie's Spa Sport Time Trial gloves are sexy and surprisingly comfortable (service is fast and friendly)

My favorites are the old Pearl Izumi Race glove that have no padding on the palm. I'll need to find something else after I wear my current pair out, since they don't offer them anymore.

It looks like the Pearl Izumi Gel Lite are probably what I'm going to get, seeing as how they are quite cheap and recommended by the most people in here

Thanks!
