Don't forget the Raleigh Road Ace. I had to pass on one a few weeks back, I didn't have $300.
Was in gorgeous shape, full on aero AX.,,,,BD
And of course, one of my four aerowinds... I really should get one of the 27" wheeled ones roadworthy someday. This one is a 26 inch wheeled bike.

i just acquired this aero bike, and was hoping someone here could help identify the frame. i believe it's a medici based on the rampant lion decoration on the head tube. also, there's a logo by clycart of san marcos, ca on the bottom bracket. which i believe was affiliated with some people from masi, or medici. the bike is a hybrid of italian and japanese parts. the shifters, seat post, brakes, and cranks are all shimano dura-ace. galli headset, ttt stem/bars, and mavic rims. the down tube and seat tube are teardrop shaped, and the brake and shifter cables are all internal. also, interesting is the rear brake which mounts of the frame near the bottom bracket. it has some nice hand lugging on the frame. anyone can help identify anything about the bike? thanks.

I disliked the Aero Era intensely. It's not so much the bikes themselves, and you guys have some very good looking examples, it was the concept.
It was the start of the Let's Make Everything Incompatible With Everything Else So Everyone Will Have to Buy Everything From Only Us. This was followed by Let's Change Everything So It's Incompatible With Our Own Products From Last Year. And the best part was the concept of Let's Provide Zero Repair Or Replacement Parts To The Bike Shops.
And the whole idea that aero parts were going to make a difference anyway. The bike magazines quickly figured out they had no affect (this was back when the bike magazines dared to right such exposes). Real bike racing was figuring out things like helmets made a small difference and the rider's position made a huge difference but flaired in jockey cages did not make a difference.
And then the whole idea evaporated within a few years and we were left with the realization that this was not a technological innovation at all but just some corporate marketing scheme that created the a fad. And it's been like this ever since. I wonder how much longer I will be able to tolerate living with only ten cogs in the back when I know that having eleven will make all the difference in the world.

MKahri, Much of what you say is true. To Shimano's credit they were thinking out of the box & AX was part of a bigger idea. Improving the function of the bicycle. Before the mid-eighties Campagnolo owned the high end bike component market. There failure to innovate almost killed them. It in fact it did drive Suntour & others virtually out of business. Most companies adopted aero as a mater of style only. C-record & Superbe Pro are two group examples. The aero era introduced index shifting & many other true component innovations from Shimano.
One of my favorite books is “The High Tech Bicycle” by Edward P. Stevenson Copyright 1982. He wisely predicted that Campy’s conservative nature would do them in.

That Dura Ace AX stuff is all old and out of date. How about I do you a favor and trade you some more modern Shimano 105 SC parts for that. No additional charge... hey, I'm a nice guy. ;-)
