45 miles today, hardly any on road and relaxed and took in the views ... we were maybe 1/2 to 1 mph slower with our average speed and enjoyed it a lot more.
A couple of pics from the same ride but a couple of weeks ago ... the ones at the top of the hill you can't see it but is looking towards the sea in the distance where we live / had cycled from.

I rode part of a charity ride on Saturday since my office is the state chapter's main sponsor for the ride, then made my way over to a campground where I met up with the youth group I help mentor. They had ridden out from the city a different way for a weekend campout to practice for RAGBRAI.
Part of my route meant about 6mi of gravel, which I didnt think twice about...until it poured for an hour and a half that morning which left the gravel soft and gritty. So one of my road bikes got to play on wet smooshy gravel for a half hour! Once I hit pavement and knew I was close to water, I used half a water bottle on flushing out the drivetrain while riding.

That was the Gravel Grovel this past November. That's a photo of the 60-mile start, and I did the 20-mile; it was a blast! Would love to try the 60 this year. I would like to do the Death March, but the Melting Mann and Barry Roubaix are the two weekends following.

I am envious of the lucky Georgians! LOL- or, maybe they are just very active. This is not technically a gravel spot, but it looks cool....

Suffolk Bike Riders Association used to take the ferry over from Port Jefferson. I never saw a single bloom on that ride but it sure was pretty, and pretty fun.
Ya'll come down if you want.

It's a blast for sure! Big climbs and need to have good brakes for wicked descents. Haven't tried the 60, but I understand it is a lot of treacherous singletrack and double track.

A little gravel riding today.
Tried to go up to the Cheam trail head to hike to the summit on the Chipmunk FSR, the usual domain of dirt bikes and 4x4's.
Super steep sustained terrain that called for slow low gear or good old bike hiking.
Made it up about 10km's before gassing out and realizing I wouldn't summit that day so I turned around for 45 minutes of exilerating near technical downhill.
Oh well... Tomorrow's another day.
Some pics:
The time estimates for google maps is funny - apparently they don't take into consideration elevation.
Oh so clean and unsweaty the start always is...
Lot's of big puddles to ride through
Getting steeper...
Some jeeps grinding away in the distance.
Lady Peak with Mt. Cheam out of sight around the corner to the left.
A view of Mt. Slesse behind. It's NE buttress is one of the classic climbs of North America. I was lucky to do it in the late 80's.
Contemplating the long run down
It looks like a lot of this with rough sections thrown in for fun.

uhh, that ^^^ looks bumpy in a jeep with 35's.
If I was riding there, it would absolutely change my perspective on my current bicycle choices.

You know of course, triple cranks are not allowed in gravel
Are those 26 inch tires? They need to be 27.5 inch to be allowed on gravel roads
Are those rim brakes? Needs to be disc brakes on gravel roads.

Not only rim brakes either, cantis on the back and V's on the front... and they worked too!
It's not trendy in this sub forum atm but it's worth remembering that not all gravel riding is smoothed and groomed and gravel bikes aren't all just an expensive fatter tired versions of their go fast road cousins.
Around here the current "gravel" bike would be limited more to dike trails and main access gravel and that would leave endless km's of FSR mainly put through the province for logging or transmission line work; but the conditions are sketchy and grades virtually impossible to ride with road gearing or posture. Even my low of 22 - 36 isn't really low enough. At the same time the distances are long enough that a full squish mtb would be a dog to ride so the versatile old HT works well.
Here's a pic I snapped a couple of weeks ago on a ride.

So I thought the road was going to be a significant paved arterial, and then I was wrong. The approach and descent into Moses Coulee.

Rode the New River Trail in VA on the recommendation from another thread, it is beautiful!! 50 continuous miles (point to point) of flat, fast gravel with amazing scenery. Did the full out and back two days in a row while visiting some family this week, my first gravel century(s).
Hope it wasn't one of you guys that had the KOM, sorry not sorry.
