Does anyone ride with their dog?

No, not ride their dog, but ride with one on one of those retractable leashes? I've been seeing a few folks doing just that in the local park, and have yet to see anyone take a header doing so. It looks like it would get damn interesting if a cat jumped out and lured the dog into giving chase. Even the dog stopping to water a tree might be cause for alarm, but it does look like a helluva good way to keep the dog in shape as well as the rider. One lady even had the leash handle slid down on her handle bar, which looked like disaster waiting to happen to me. Just curious if anyone out here does it and if there's a trick I'm not seeing that makes it second nature to both man and beast? Thanks in advance for any and all replies...

I live on a dead end dirt road I used to ride with my dog on that and into and around a hay fied at the end of the road. That dog got sick and died. My new dog is still in training, but I will start him soon. I can see how a leash could cause trouble. I would reccomend an electronic collar.

I used to do this with either of my 2 dogs when they were younger, but I used a regular leash not one of those retractable contraptions & always on a bike path not mixing with vehicle traffic. I found it was much better/safer to ride a mountain bike vs a road bike, more stable. Don

No. My lab has HD. No running for him
Maybe when I adopt a friend for him.

Seems to me like it would be asking for trouble, but OTOH dogs like to run and it might be that if you're cruising along, the dog would not be likely to do anything stupid because he's having fun keeping up with you.

I think a well-trained dog that will stay with you WITHOUT a leash (electric collar would work) would be safer, that way if the dog does something unexpected you don't crash.

I've been on dirt trails with my lab. I tried it once with a leash, and yes, it IS a disaster. All it took was him going the around the wrong side of a tree and I learned the error of my ways.

As long as we will be on trails and not on the street, I take off the leash and tell him to heel. He is well trained and will stay at my side. If I am going to be riding on the street, I leave him at home.

BTW, this is Taz, (at the end of a long night of geocaching). He's a good dog.

HD = Hip Displasia. It's a disorder in some larger dogs where the ball/socket of the hip is not formed correctly.

OTOH = On The Other Hand

I saw a person riding with the dog leash attached to a bar coming down from the chainstay. That way if the dog pulled to the side it wouldnt affect the steering. If the bar was only able to bend backwards like a kickstand the dog could pull the bike forwards.

When I was a child, we would go out for rides with our dog (not leashed). He would run beside my mother and catch the hem of her skirt in his teeth.

I ride with the dog all the time

In the mountains behind the house on the trails he just loves it.

We hard to start off slow until he could get into shape and handle the longer rides. Now a 20 km ride in the mountains
with lots of descending is no problem for him and he loves it. If I don't take him out at least 1 time a week he gets pissy with me.

Advice - before and after each ride clean his paws and rub them down with vasaline.

At first I thought you meant having the dog in or on the bike with you. Having your trained attack dog running with you seems a good way to deal with dogs chasing you .

Please dont' ride with your dog on a leash. I don't care if you crash, but your dog might make me crash.

Yeah, in my young and stupid days I tried to bike with dog leashed to the bar. . .Nutmeg was her name. Well, she stopped abruptly and "assumed the position" and it jerked me clean off the saddle. [And that was the last of my Ridin' With a Leashed Dog Days.]

An older fellow in our neighborhood has devised a two dog harness setup. He has two husky/malamute type dogs which he hitches up to the harness and has them pull him...kinda like an off season sled dog training setup...very amusing....the dogs really seem to enjoy it.

Thank you. I don't know how many times I have seen people doing this when I try to pass on the riders left and the dog always runs to the left while the rider goes to the right, leaving a "trip wire" in front of me. I want to get off the bike and give the rider a few lashings with that leash.

PLEASE do not ride with your dog on a leash!

I had two dogs that I used to ride with. One was larger and he ran free on the sidewalk while I rode in the street, the second was smaller and he rode in a pannier with his head and one paw sticking out. I had a friend that bolted a carpet-covered piece of plywood down to his rack and the dog sank its claws into the carpet and hung on.

Here you go:
https://www.springerusa.com/
Check out the little graphic in the top left showing the person being endo-ed by the dog on a leash!
I hear these things are very common in Germany, where it illegal to tie your dog up outside, hence a need for guided exercise.
