Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pinarello Fever

Between Rad's Montello, DrPete's F4:13, and botto's Treviso, I've caught Pinarello fever. After deciding that it's time to try a smaller frame, and that I want to learn to build up a bike, I finally scored this baby on eBay. It's a 1985 Pinarello Montello which I am pretty sure is similar to Rad's. Too bad the price wasn't as nice.

The initial build will be (*gasp* *shock*) Shimano 105 with downtube shifters and a Nitto front end (bars and stem). I'm going to bring over as much as I can from my Specialized Allez and use that until I can get the scratch together for a Super/Nuovo Record or a grey Centaur build. With everything said and done, it looks like I'll still be putting quite a bit into this guy. What do people typically spend on a budget build?

Oh man, that is sweet. Is that black or a deep blue?

I checked out the listing, you only paid $20 more than I did with the shipping cost added in. Not a bad deal at all.

Are you going to paint it or replace the decals? They're not clear coated over and easily replaced.

Or, for $100, send it to me and I'll strip it, polish it, get the logos etched and the engravings touched up.

Columbus decals - SLX and the ones on the fork - can be had on Ebay for $10.

BTW - I love mine - simply a wonderful riding machine. Congratulations.

why not go centaur 05 or 06? shouldn't cost much more than 105. Just curious, for old steel frames, does the BB take a modern sized BB such as the Shimano 6600 or 7800 BB? I've seen many nice Italian steels on ebay but didn't buy because I have trouble figuring out the parts I would need to build one up properly. Nice find!

I'm going to ride it around for a bit before I finally decide. If I like it, I'll probably just replace the decals, and touch up the paint, but otherwise leave it alone. If I decide to keep it, I'll get it repainted and perhaps rechromed. I haven't thought that far ahead since I've been trying to figure out how to get this thing on the road for as little as possible.

I am pretty sure that it's blue. It looks blue on my monitor. I guess we'll find out pretty soon. ;-)

Well, I've already got quite a bit of 105 I can use off an existing bike. Going Shimano means I can use my existing wheels, cassette, and rear derailleur, lopping off quite a bit of the up front build cost.

I did just figure out that I can do a Shimano/Centaur/Veloce mix for not much more, but I dunno if that sits well with me. What can I say, there's a bit of poseur in me. ;-)

Here's what I'm thinking in terms of build:

Front End
Ritchey Comp 1" threaded headset
Nitto Technomic stem
Nitto Noodle handlebar

Drivetrain
Tektro R100A brake levers
Suntour Superbe Pro downtube shifters (friction mode, might try and get ahold of some Dura Ace SL-7700 to try too)
Shimano 105 triple front derailleur
Shimano 105 rear derailleur (from the old bike)
Shimano BB5500 bottom bracket (I think this is available in italian thread and will work)
Ritchey Pro Road V cranks
Generic black Tektro brakes (from the old bike)

I also take the wheels and pedals (SPD-SL) off my old ride. Looks like I'll be in the neighborhood of $700 for everything, including some stuff I've left out of the list above, like bartape, chain, etc. I'm hoping I can get some decent money for my old stuff.

I'm open to suggestions, so feel free to throw stuff out here.

It's here! The frame finally arrived today, and in the described condition. I'm pretty relieved. As a bonus, the dropouts are 127/128mm, and my rear wheel slipped in without too much trouble. I'm so stoked!

The paint is not bad, and all the inside surfaces are clean. There are some chips, and some grime that need to be cleaned up. The worst part is the fork dropouts, which have something that could either be rust or some caked on grunge --- I'm not sure.

I'm still debating with myself about how to build this thing up. The build is not the most important thing for me, though. It's a fit experiment. Still, I'd like a nicely finished bike. Something that gets me more excited than my Allez.

Very nice Pinnarello. Just throw on whatever parts you have so you can ride it, then start replacing them as you go with better appropriate parts, like Campagnolo. (to stay in the good graces of 'Tulio'.)

'Super Record' would be period correct, and even going with campy Centaur 10-speed would be good, but dont hang shimano on that baby unless you have to.

just my two cents

You have no idea how much I want to get a kit from GVH or ProBikeKit. I've even thought about Mirage, or Xenon. Maybe once I get her dialed in I'll revisit the possibility of getting an SR group together, or hanging some modern Campy. In the meantime, I'll stick with the Shimano kit off my Allez.

On the other hand, I did bid on and win a gray Centaur crankset while under the influence of eggnog... Eep!

looks like pitted chrome plate to me from the pic. There must be some economical refinish process I would think

I'm going to try the Coca-Cola or white vinegar tricks. If those work, I'll follow with a coat of wax to seal up the chrome.

There also seems to be something in the fork, something that sounds like sand. Any idea what it could be?

I actually backpedalled on these since I figured out that I may not be able to get the Nitto stem as low as I want. Once I get the headset and a better idea of the upper race stack height, I'll poke around the bike shop to see if they have anything that'll work. I think some of the shorter Nitto stems will be a-OK. I also found some bars that I think I'll like better, the Nitto model 184 ("Neat"). They're anatomic, and designed specifically for STI levers.

Hey, it's better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all.

Enjoy the Paddy Wagon (or the Bowery, whichever one you end up getting)!

I like those old Pinarello frames, they look to have character. I have been watching this one to see what it goes for:

That's an awesome frame. I wish the chrome on mine looked that clean. Interesting that the dropouts are stamped "Pinarello." Mine say "Campagnolo."

If it were here in the states, it would go for $350-400. With the $100 shipping from Rome and the overseas seller, it will go for for $3-350. Nice frame.

funny, isn't it? I remember when 'scoring' SLX stickers was like buying drugs: under the counter, very hush hush, and expensive!! I once paid $35 AUS for the 3 decals
