I’ve gotta get some gumwalls

I’ve never really had a preference on gumwalls or blackwalls, but when I replaced a cheap pair of 700x20 gumwalls with a pair of Continental tires there was a huge difference in looks. I need some gumwalls.

FWIW. This is slightly pedantic, but the terminology isn't correct, at least by C&V standards.

BITD "gumwall" referred to inexpensive tires that had a thick coating of rubber covering the casing, for protection.

"Skinwall" was the term used for high performance tires that a just a very thin coat of clear rubber over the fabric.

Archaic info provided for amusement and curiosity only. I couldn't care less what people call their tires.

BITD, black side walls was an indicator of cheap tires on a cheap gas pipe department store bike!

I have several bikes with BSW tires but that's because they came with them and I'm using those up before changing.

My 1988 Peugeot doesn't look too bad and the uber cheap $10 Michelin's ride and handle really well. Besides, the treads are gray and there's enough red, white and black for a matchy-matchy effect.

Depending on the price range and durability concerns, the OP could do a lot worse than install a pair of Panaracer Paselas.

I recently put a pair of ostensibly-narrow Pasela Tourguard 27X1" tires on my '71 Schwinn Supersport, and couldn't be happier.
These inflate to a nice 26mm on the bike's original 24mm (outside width) rims.

sloar- That bike is choice, but of course you knew that.

Funny as I recall an era where some of us car junkies, restoring 50's with tall rubber couldn't find real wide width whitewalls. Production simply ended. We stooped and purchased an aftermarket rubber white covering for tires from Warshawski / JC Whitney. Cheesy.. Lol

Only later when the hobby picked up and the demand was calling, a few makers started to offer real whitewalls.

There are plenty of classic options like Compass, Soma, Pacenti Pari-Moto and Grand Bois options that I am sure lots of people will come up with.
I'll just add two or three that I have my eyes on:


Schwalbe Delta Cruiser (only in 28-622) but really cheap @€10,90.


Continental Grand Prix Urban. Not cheap @€49 each and a new model designed for Schindelhauer's urban bikes. 35-622 only.
It has black reflective stripes that only show up when light hits it.

It's amazing how much difference tires make, both in look and feel of a bike (and of cars too, BTW, but that's for another forum). Well worth the extra outlay. Says even the close-fisted Dutchman. My favorites so far are Panaracer Paselas for touring and Eroica-style rides and Veloflex Masters for racing bikes. Challenge Paris-Roubaix and Strada Bianca have also worked well for me so far for touring. I am currently trying out the 28mm Clement LGG tires, and first impressions are not bad.

Vittoria Zaffiro Pro come in that same light gumwall color. I really like mine.


I also recommend Veloflex Masters. They ride better, wear quicker, cost more, and get dark fast.

As not being an English speaking guy I will avoid the skin/gum wall situation and just call them tan wall... For quite a while they were difficult to get but now it is easier.

Have done a bunch of comparison shopping/riding lately on tan sidewall tires.
Paselas are nice but not the fastest tire out there.
Vittoria Corsa Graphenes are very fast and durable but kinda pricey.
Panaracer Gravel Kings, which have nothing to do with gravel, are also fast and also durable but a darker brown sidewall.
Continental Ultra Sports are very durable, pretty fast with the chili rubber compound, but also darker brown.

Show your bike you love it and get it some Veloflex Masters. $28 at Ribble but they frequently don’t have black/tan. Usually blue and red.

Add to the list Michelin Classic. Dark brown. I've yet to try, have seen them at the store and like the looks.

Yes, I've heard good things about those but have not tried them yet. I hope to do that someday.

Meanwhile, I'm a big fan of gumwalls in general, and in most cases, but sometimes the blackwall fits the bill just as well or better, IMO For instance, Styggno's red Merckx above, or my Lambert below, black > tan.

My tastes have certainly changed over the last few years.
Used to be that I only wanted black wall, didn't like tan wall at all. I've since done a 180 and only go with tan wall now, don't even consider black wall, regardless of the bike. I just think tan wall looks so much better.

I have the Strada LGG in the 60 tpi version, 32mm. People are trash-talking it, but I think it's pretty good.

I was considering the Vittoria Graphene, but xxcycle.com had a special price for the Continental GP4000 SII, which I've been dying to try for a few years, so I got those. They arrived from France nine days after I ordered them. I'll try them out in a week or two.

My fleet is predominately tubular. In recent years, tan walls have been even less available on tubulars (I think).
I haven't been concerned with the appearance in the past, esp with dirty tanwalls the norm for me in wet PNW.
I do have one set each Veloflex Roubaix and Vlaanderen = tan

Maybe tan wall for future clincher wheels, but they get so nasty in the wet + dirt.
