1960 SpeedKing?

The charity shop where I volunteer received a black three-speed SpeedKing as a donation. Has anyone ever heard of this brand? The Sturmey-Archer hub is dated 1960 and the general appearance is consistent with this date. The stickers and head-badge say made in England, but not where. The only two brands from this period that I have first-hand experience with are Phillips and Raleigh. Subjectively it looks more like a Phillips than a Raleigh to me.

I have some pictures ready to go but the forum won't let me post pictures because I'm too new.

Replies appreciated so I can get up to 10 posts and then post pictures. I'd rather not get there by making random useless comments on other people's threads.

Well Welcome aboard, random thoughtful comments will get you there faster and you will need 5 X 2 days to get there anyway, Its an anti spam measure that serves us very well.

I would encourage you to engage all around as it helps us to get better sense of how to help.

All that being said, the Speed King is likely made by Raleigh as they made most of them by 1960 have swallowed up dozens of their competitors by then.

The dated rear hub is probably worth more than the bike.

Thanks, happy to engage, for example I could post about this bike on the generic sticker thread, but that wouldn't be much use without pictures.

Two days isn't too bad.

Also if you tried already your pics may have gone to the gallery and might get moved here.

Here's his link:
albrt's albums

The OP should also ask about this in this thread and post your album link there:

They will know.

Thanks. I only actually tried to post three of these - does the gallery grab pictures as soon as you download, before you even try to post them?

Yes, I believe that's how it works. After you have the ten posts in two days you can post pics at will and they're automatically hosted in your gallery.

Thanks again. I tried to post to the English 3-Speed thread but it says I can't post links either until my probation time is up.

I did a little googling around. There was an Englishman named John Graves in Sheffield that had a mail order business. He sold Speedking bicycles in the 1930's.

You could still ask the same questions from a more likely informed group.

And @cb400bill to the rescue once again.

That's pretty cool, looks to have some non-Raleighesque details to me that knows very little.

Thanks! Couldn't respond yesterday because I already used my 5 posts. Your google powers are superior to mine. I only found references to an American prewar Speed King model by Cleveland Welding.

Based on your information I did find some additional references. Graves went out of business in 1969. I'm pretty sure this bike is a Graves SpeedKing, but no closer to identifying the manufacturer. I'll post some additional photos and go on the English 3-Speed forum tomorrow if I have full posting privileges.

The only Speed King I've ever heard of is a bass drum pedal made by Ludwig.
