Randy's Chiorda mixte came with a set of this type; in this case made by Agrati.

This bicycle's shell is threaded Italian but the crankset does not make use of the threads.

I will add my own experience with an old fauber BB. NDS cup unscrewed clockwise, drive side unscrewed anti-clockwise. Got the NDS off with moderate effort after having soaked in penetrant. DS cup was an absolute monster to get off. After having unscrewed DS cup, no penetrant was visible on the threads (5-56). I used a punch and a hammer to hammer the cup in the unscrew direction. The most important thing, after having appropriate tools, I found to be applying the punching force in a as tangential way as possible. If you are off the tangent too much, you make no progress even if you have broken it free. All tools and the cups survived the treatment. The punch was deformed, but luckily they are not expensive. The cups have some marks on them, but nothing major as they are made of a very hard type of steel.
The pliers are used to hold the punch while you hammer it.
