Hey guys,

I wanted to get new front and rear Derails. Does it matter what brand you get? Also with front if my seat post is 30.9 i would get the 31.8mm fron derail correct?

What do you have on there currently? Shimano and SRAM use different pull ratios, so you have to match shifters and rear derailleurs (unless you go SRAM Attack, which is compatible with Shimano's 2:1 stuff). Front derailleurs don't matter as much because they all use the same ratio.

ON the rear derail saus Shimano Alivio. Also the shifters are Shimano 8speed it says.

If you're gonna stay with your 8speed in the rear I wouldn't put much more into it than deore or deore lx. You already have alivio which isn't terrible. Unless you wanna change the whole drivetrain (cassette/freewheel, crank, shifters) I wouldn't bother with anything higher.

Well i do want to upgrade to 9 or 10 speed. Just wondering how and what i would need really. I know i would need a new cassette.

Well if you swap to deore that leaves you the option to run a 9speed at a later date. New alivio I believe is also 9speed, so pending how old your bike is, you may not even need new derailleurs for 9spd, just shifters.
Anything better and yould be forced to upgrade parts.
A common misconception when asking these questions is do you know you have a cassette or do you have a freewheel? There definatly are 9sppd freewheels but I don't think there is any larger than that. If by chance you do have a freewheel then you'll require a different rear hub or wheel that supposrt cassettes and not a freewheel.
Personally I run 2x8. Alivio fd deore rd, 8spd alivio shifters. Drivetrain runs fine and leaves me room for 9spd if I really want to in the future...

Well i ordered a new Rear derail the other day. Link is below to the derail. It says 9 speed but can support 7 and 8. I do want to upgrade to 9 and i have a cassette. So i am trying to figure where i would need to go to upgrade my cassette to a 9 speed. I also would like to get better shifters because mine are not smooth and there just kinda blah lol

That rd will suite fine. You should be able to find the cassette you need on jenson. There may be some tools you'll need to swap the cassette if you don't have them or have your LBS swap it for a fee. If you go to 9speed you will require a 9speed chain. As far as shifters your lookin at mega 9 alivio, deore, and I believe there is 9speed slx shifters aswell(unless you find an old set of 9spd xt on ebay but its abit overkill imo). A set of deore shifters will run ya a cool 100bux new. Ofcourse if you're running a single ring crank all yould need is the rear shifter and cost should be considerably less since yould only need 1 shifter.

How would i find what cassette i would need? Also do i need to change the hub i think it is where the cassette goes onto? I do have the tools to take the Cassette off also.

You can filter cassettes for road and mountain use on most websites, try to find a cassette with the smallest sprocket at 11t. You should be able to use the same hub for 9spd. I hav a freewheel so I'm kinda lacking in that experience.
The deore shifters are def a good choice, Id use the same if I went 9spd.

As long as the cassette is designed to be compatible with sram or shimano it should work on your hub.

Choose the gear range that suits your fitness level or the type of riding you do. If you are a stronger rider, or don't do alot of climbing you might not need as large of a cog in the back.

That cassette you linked to comes in 11-32, or 11-34. The 34 will be a lower gear (it will be easier to pedal) than the 32. Your new rear derailleur supports up to a 34 tooth cog, so I wouldn't buy a cassette with a cog larger than that.

Hi blando89,

At another thread you are considering to go for disc brakes from caliper/v-brakes. In which you will need to replace the hubs to accommodate a disc rotor. With this in mind, and you wanting to upgrade may I suggest the following:

If you're going 10spd, you will need to change the following:
a. Rear Derailuer (10spd)
b. Cassete (10spd)
c. Chain (10spd)
d. Shifters 10spd Dynasys
e. crankset (for 10spd) (optional but recommended)
f. Disc Brakes
g. Disc Specific Hubs (because you need to put rotors)
h. Disc Caliper Adaptor (A2Z or equivalent)
i. Fork with Disc Mounts (assuming if the current one doesn't have disc mounts)

The cheapest 10spd option would be Shimano Deore Dynasys. It would probably be cheaper to get a groupset (drivetrain+shifters+brakes); but be careful of FD and the BB as different bikes require different FDs and BBs.
I think it would be better to take it to an LBS and get their advice.

I am afraid the cost of the groupset and fork might approach the cost of the bike

I might wait on the disc brakes for a bit. I just wanted to see what i need to do to upgrade to disc brakes. I already ordered the 9 speed Rear Derail so what i wanted to know what else would i need beside shifters and chain for 9 speed.

So would it be good to go if i got Cassette 9spd (link up top), Chaine for 9 Spd, Shifters 9spd. Then i would not mind getting a new crank set and if i do how do you know what one you need?

I was thinking about ordering these two and i was not sure how i would pick a crankset. Does it matter for teeth and does the crankset also need to me a Shimano?
