Vintage Bike Saddles

Hi all! I purchased a couple of vintage 10 speeds just for the fun of it. Got both for $40USD, a Free Spirit Ted Williams and an Astra Tour de Belgique. Long story short, I am riding one and the other is disassembled down to the frame.

After doing some research I come to find out, the Astra equipped with an Ideale 42 and the Free Spirit with a Taihei Unite 7387 are very very collectable saddles. Are the saddles strictly valued for collectibility or are they preferred saddles of choice. I'm stumped!

Some Ideal saddles do have considerable collectible value, but I am not too sure if the #42 is one of them. As for the other saddle, I have never heard of it so I can't comment, one way or the other.

I am in the same boat. Ideale did make some nice tensioned leather saddles of Brooks (some claim even higher) quality, but I have never heard of the other saddle.

I have a couple of #42 in the fleet. It's a lot like a B-17, a little shorter and a little narrower. I like them a lot.

The Ideale saddle that many collectors look for is the model TB90.
It was their racing saddle with the bent aluminum plate frame. Which resulted in a lighter than usual suspension leather saddle.....

I have an Idéale 39 (the one fitted to less-expensive bikes) and a model 80. Both are nice saddles. The ones that seem to be collectible are the Daniel Rebour signature models, although given the fad for Eroica rides, prices for even the 39s are quite high. You can see for yourself if you search in eBay.

Among other hot Ideale, the 92, the 90s, there are a range of them from the 50s and 60s that were prized by randos of the day. For the other one I see no real distinction and I never heard of it.

Thanks for the feedback!!!

Both saddles are with the shoe repair guy, getting a beauty treatment. Both a very usable, the Ideale is almost 1/4 thick leather, no tears/gashes, rivets still in good shape and in B to B- shape, I may use that one eventually. The other saddle looks almost NOS but not quite as elegant to the eye...

Thanks, Rick
