Tire size puzzle
I've ridden a fair number of miles and been around bikes quite a bit in my life, but I've never understood tire size. I am currently puzzled by the Continental Sport Contacts I have on my Cannondale Quick. The tires say they're 28 x 1 1/4 x 1 3/4. I took a quick look online and can't find such a size. What do all these numbers mean? Do they translate to something else, say a 700c X ??. Thanks!

28 x 1 1/4 x 1 3/4 is a bizarre way Continental describes the 32mm 700c variant of that tire.
Go look at the "product range" charts near the bottom of the page for the Top Contact 2:
https://www.continental-tires.com/bi...s/top-contact2
622mm is the bead seat diameter of 700c tires, so ETRTO 32-622 is the 32mm 700c tire.

Thanks. I checked gain and they're Sport Contact, not Top Contact. But I imagine that doesn't affect this issue. I'll have to delve into these sizing systems a little more.

28" is the inch designation for a 700c tire. Ironically the designation seems to be used mostly in Europe. Continental has been known to use fractional designations on decimal sizes and decimal designations on fraction sizes; so really the ETRTO is the only sure way to get what you need. At least when dealing with Continentals. Everyone else follows the rules. Which doesn't eliminate all of the confusion, but most of it.
