Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best place to buy tires?

I did a quick search, but couldn't find a consensus on a consistently great place (low prices, good shipping, high quality) to buy tires. If anybody's got a recent favorite, give a shout out for all of us.

I was surprised at how much pricing did vary - between Nashbar, Performance, REI, and PBK, there was a nearly $30 difference in Conti GP4000s.

For Conti GP4000s', my lbs beat the price of all the online sellers you listed except PBK (on the other side of the frickin' planet).

PBK - I've had several P3R's shipped to CA in a few days, with free shipping.

REI is the most expensive but with the easiest-to-use satisfaction guarantee. Performance's prices fluxuate all the time, almost comically so, but often they'll have certain brands at like 30% off. Just gotta watch for it.

I've bought tires from PBK but the recent reports of credit card fraud makes me leery.

Well, I would suggest that this forum is definitely not the place to find any sort of consensus. That is why it is so entertaining. That said I would echo the earlier posts (perhaps building toward a consensus) that PBK is currently a very cost effective place for tires.

i dont know how often you guys go through tires, but after shipping and whatnot, my lbs is usually within 4 - 8 dollars different than what i can find online for the michelin carbons i like to run. for this little difference I usually just support the lbs.

i know thats not the question specifically, but it might not hurt to check with your lbs, sometimes their prices arent that bad.

At all 3 LBSs in my area:

Conti GP 4000: $59.99

PBK: $39.99

That's a LBS no-go in my book

Make sure to give qbike.com a quick glance when you're price comparing. They have a fairly large database of vendors (including ebay), but don't include pbk. I always run my search by them when I'm hunting for new items.

Hey, I know Performance and REI, but what does "PBK" stand for? I tried to search and got Pottery Barn for Kids.

They're great if you don't mind your tires in small sizes with flowers and ponies on the side walls
