G'day from Northeast Coast of Oz

Hi, my name is Mark but my nickname is Max. I am an Aussie who is about to begin my first tour on my first Bent, in the USA.
I have been trying to get away on this trip for over two years but was diagnosed with "Meniere's Disease" just before I was about to start in 2003.
But now I'm going anyway half-sick or not because life is just gonna pass me by if I put it off any longer!

In the meantime I have read everything about every type of Bent there is but I still do'nt know which one to buy when I get there. I am a complete Noob who knows nothing about touring or the USA, or even why I want to do this, but I do. The whole idea freaks me out sometimes and I often wonder if I am capable of sustaining the demands and discomforts of an extended and mostly self-supported tour.

I have read many Journals and Forums in an effort to avoid making too many mistakes or bad choices, so that's why I'm here. I am 54 but I do'nt look or act my age and have never "grown up". My other interests are Surfing, Paragliding, online computer games and flying my light Aeroplane. (Storch SSMk4).

I am starting in April/May at the town of Alfred NY and heading West to start with but may divert anywhere, that is my only plan so far. I will be riding some kind of Bent and towing a trailer. look for a tall skinny guy with a Kangaroo flag on his bike.
Love yas all, Max.

Welcome to the forum Max! Sounds like a great goal you have set for yourself. I am not sure what Meniere's disease is? I like your kick ass attitude. Better to do things while ya can, don't you think? I have Rheumatoid arthritis and I love riding. I'm working hard to stay fit and to keep on cycling as long as I can. I just turned 50. Hoping to do some kind of charity ride to raise money for arthritis research in the near future.
Good luck with your plans for your big ride. Even though I am Canadian, I have heard that many US towns have bike clubs, riding out of local bike shops. Might be a good way to meet some fellow cyclists and learn about the area.
Good luck!
Sharon

Hiya Max. I ride a Tour Easy (from Easy Racers) and find it very comfy and pretty good on the hills. There are used recumbents for sale via Recumbent Cycling News. There is also a forum for 'bents in this site.

Adventure Cycling organization is devoted to cross country riders and has great maps to help the long distance people.

As a fellow fellow in his early 50s, I say, GO 4 IT. Have a great journey!!!!!

And, when you have a break from wind surfing, bicycling and whatever, and when you "grow up" drop by the 50+ forum!
