36 miles Three Harbors ride, from Ventura, to Channel Islands Harbor to Hueneme Lighthouse. Beautiful California winter day, mid 50s to low 70s, though big time headwind home ... as usual. I rode the '78 Super Course, one of my favorite rides.

It was a BEAUTIFUL day today, was it not?

I was on the South Bay beach bike path. Almost no cyclists. I've read that there are a bazillion bikes being sold. The thing is, there are fewer riders than ever. Are people just "acquiring" them to be ridden once but stored?

It was a perfect day to ride and feast afterwards. I saw may be 2 groups of 12 or more riders during my trip.

It's still winter time with a small window of sunshine so I'm guessing people prefer to stay home than head out. Lately every chance I get I grab my bike and go outside.

I am down south in the Westlake Village/Agoura area (about an hour north of Los Angeles) visiting relatives. I got out for a nice ride to the top of the Rock Store climb on Mulholland Drive--only about 25 miles but over 2000' of climbing. It was a surprisingly warm and clear day, with temps in the upper 70s when I finished around 10:30am.

Yesterday lots of errandonneuring on the International. Today, a loop following the Hudson and East Rivers, the southern half of NYC. Successful shakedown of the Mk.1 and myself - longest ride since a bit of surgery in October. All systems go!

Oof. Got in 20 miles after not riding for a while.

Temperature climbed all the way up to 45° today, but winds were straight from the west at 20mph gusting to around 30. Basically all of my routes are East/West dominant since there's not a lot of room to go North/South. So the first section was a 5 mile long slog directly into that headwind, making 8-10 mph was a struggle.

At least it made the return cruising along at 20-25 mph a whole lot of fun

After 31 straight days (a record) of rain in the Seattle area, today was dry. Since I don't do Super Bowl, I took a ride to Kenmore for some special back pain medication, then did my usual 20 miles out/back to Redmond. Nippy, but dry. Nice to finally get out after 32 days off the bike. Tested out the new Superbe track pedals, Flite saddle and Superbe levers with Rustines hoods. Boy those things are grippy! Pedals feel good and wide - no sleeping toes on today's ride.

I took the '78 PR10 on a 28 mile Pasadena vintage ride today. Beautiful 70+ degrees. 36 riders showed up, and some great looking bikes.

That Cinelli could have come from Spence Wolf like that although he was more well known for fabricating his own long cages for his "Alpine" gearing builds. He had Merz build several frames for his customers and Jim used plenty of Rally's. I think they have a bad rap about failing, they seem to work very well when set up and maintained properly.

This one works exactly as intended for me after 40 years, took it on Eroica in 2016, worked flawlessly, especially on the flying, rapid fire gravel descent's and grind it out uphills, not only that but this bike was amazingly stable and sure footed as well. Point being, they can work just fine with the correct setup and not being pushed beyond their limits. I know many have failed so tolerance must be minimal with little or no leeway when we are used to much more forgiving limits.

Groundhog day ride/first ride of 2020. First sunny day within recent memory and a freakish, record-breaking high of 53 degrees!

Rode 45 miles up north of the city. Still 5 inches of snow on the ground up there, but the roads were clear and dry. Tons of other riders out - crushing headwind for the last 5 miles.



Lovely snow-filled ravines. The warm temps meant the streams were flowing.

Did you notice the cage extension on the front derailleur to accomodate the tiny inner chainring? Never seen that before. Beautiful bike.

I enjoyed my ride up to the top of the Rock Store climb (Mulholland Hwy) on Saturday, that I did it again on Sunday. Same road, different day & pics.

Spaghetti Legs 

I used to say the local weather is freaky warm, but it happens so often now, not particularly freaky anymore. Anyway, working nights, so didn’t get out in it until a quick ride around town this afternoon. No new scenery to report, so here’s a post ride pic of the Bianchi. I don’t think it’s made an appearance here before.

The town where I live is named after a point of land that juts out into the Pacific Ocean 13 miles. The Point Reyes lighthouse, built in 1870, was my destination on a warm, calm day yesterday. Emphasis to "calm". It's often a very windy ride. The wind was gusting 70 mph there a few days ago.




On the way to the point this row of cypress trees lines the driveway of the decommissioned ship-to-shore communications station which now serves as offices for the Point Reyes National Seashore.




The road to the point makes up for all its potholes and patches with the great views.




There are several historic dairy ranches on the way to the point. I stopped to thank these ladies for the cream in my morning coffee.




I was lucky to see the Tule Elk who inhabit the hills near here. They even stayed still long enough for me to put the long lens on the camera.




My destination. Because of the frequent fog, for 105 years there were lighthouse keepers and their families living on this lonely point maintaining the light. In 1975 a new automated light was installed nearby but the old light has been kept up by the national park for the thousands of visitors who come out here each year to see the light and to watch for whales.




The erosion patterns on the rocks above the lighthouse provided a good backdrop for the obligatory bike photo.




I didn't see any whales today so I made a side trip to the seasonal Elephant Seal colony nearby.
