2017 NorCal Fire Thread

In-laws evacuated their home in Glen Ellen last night, Sonoma County is full of fire and bad news.

And Mount Diablo State Park is closed, at least for today:

My daughter-in-law's from the Petaluma area. Some of her family have been evacuated. Closer to my home here in SoCal, Anaheim Hills is burning again, homes have been lost. We just rode our bikes through that neighborhood yesterday.

Full house today. Sister and family and five pets evacuated SR at 2am. Both kids' schools are gone as well as many friend's houses.

I could smell the smoke all the way in Foster City.
So sad. Hope everyone's families/friends are safe.

Atlas Peak and Yountville fires are damn close to my home town, Napa, My Grandmother was a Teacher in an Atlas Peak school house.

She was taking classes to become that teacher, in San Jose, in 1906..

We were getting enough smoke in Santa Cruz from this yesterday to cause me to skip biking.

It'll be the trainer for me til the air clears. Don't want any more particulates in the lungs.

Hundreds of homes in the Fountain Grove area were leveled by flames so hot they melted the glass off of cars and turned aluminum wheels into liquid. One neighborhood of older homes was scorched, leaving only brick chimneys and downed power lines.
This is tearing me apart.

In-laws have no idea if their house is still standing, but they're not optimistic. When they evacuated Sunday night the fire was down hill and up-wind from them.

Red Cross information and donation page here: Northern California Wildfires Response Information

I am so sorry people are going through this, a lot of lives and communities will be going to go through a long recovery.

So far it's just an inconvenience/news story for us, hopefully the east hills don't go up in flames tonight. I'm off my bike and running regime; trainer in the garage, booting up my T25 and FitnessBlender videos.

It's hard to imagine what so many are going through. One day they have their homes and comfortable, next they have nothing. I don't know what I'd do at my age, perhaps sell the land, get a cargo van and just travel around.

I think I'd move to a retirement community where someone else does all the yardwork and upkeep.

Today's the first day the air in Walnut Creek has been really bad... just our turn for the wind direction I guess.

It's worse today here in the Peninsula. Sun is shining like it was during the eclipse with that yellow tint to it. Smoke all around. Looks like I won't be riding for awhile. It may be trainer time in the garage.

Staying with family in Mill Valley tonight. We got a Nixel alert of an advisory evacuation in east Napa, and decided to get us and the kids out of town rather than have that turn into a mandatory evac while we were sleeping.

We were on the bike trail up to Yountville on Sunday and for once had a massive tailwind on the way home. We thought it was great at the time, not for a second imagining what those hot dry winds would do that same evening.

Friends and co-workers have lost houses and property. So far everyone we know is safe, and all pets are safe too.

@DiabloScott any word on your family's house yet?

I was staying in Napa all week working the golf tournament that week and it ended on Sunday. My friend wanted to stay another night so we can finish getting our stuff but I said no. Luckily I did. We left at 638pm and by the time I got home and settled from unpacking and doing laundry, it was all over the news. Went back anyway and found the place was evacuated. A pic of our structure on fire was sent to me. I still stayed to help out get food available. Just got home last night and it took me three hours because of the closures. My throat, sinuses, chest and eyes are really bothering me now.

The cops escorted father- and brother in-law to the property Tuesday afternoon and there was vegetation burned but the house was OK. They stayed a while and put out some hot spots and hosed things down but had to leave again. So they were incredibly lucky, but the fire may have come back and burned the house down anyway... still not sure.

They're now staying with family in Pinole because they couldn't stand the smoke anymore.

In-laws are in Sebastopol. Was worried that the SR fire would continue west toward them after it jumped the 101, but apparently the wind shifted from the west. Still, they got their camper packed and read to bolt if need be.

Just flew into San Jose this afternoon from OC, the air is really smoky all the way down here. The scale of these fires is hard to imagine.

This is great news! What a relief!! So stressful just waiting... and not knowing. At least they can sleep tonight!

Just got word that the evacuation in parts of Napa have been lifted. So Atlas Peak, Silverado Country Club, Hardman, Monticello and West of Silverado Trail.

@scotch, So far I understand that Sebastopol is still safe for a while. The winds have calmed and a bunch more firefighters from around the State are coming to help to give our guys a rest. My cousin does maintenance for the fire trucks and he's telling me how they too are working over time because the trucks are coming in to be checked out and ready for the next run.

The glass house at the top of Twin Sisters in FF is no more. Fire jumped Wooden Valley road several places between the Napa/Solano line and Moskowite corner. I know there is damage in Gordon Valley, but haven't seen any pictures.
Several friends in Santa Rosa and one near Kentwood are so far ok.
The east side of Napa Valley has burned almost from -80/Why-12 to Lake Berryessa.

Thanks for the info, Siu Blue Wind. The devastation in that area is so heartbreaking.
