Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The noted freeze-thaw cycle is the notorious cause in Michigan, but potholes occur in places that never see freezing temps as well.

What are potholes and what do the cause

I don't think that the roads in San Diego are that bad. Also I agree that having gatorskins on those wheels is a sin! Get some poor weather/poor condition wheels that you can put those gatorskins on, and put some fast tires on the Corimas.

I didn't know it rained that much of temps went below freezing there.
We've been getting a ton of rain the last few months. Roads all over San Diego are in very bad shape. The city cant even keep up with all the repairs!

Seriously, the bike is likely limited by the tires. You might find it to be a completely different ride with light, supple, grippy rubber.

Then again you might get spoiled so don't blame me.
