Last week I found a nice and serviceable Canari long sleeve jersey that had lived in places unknown since around 1998 when I lived in Ca. It is perfect for somewhat warmer than normal NC winter days. What is your oldest still being used clothing item?

I have my last team kit from about 1995 or so, I use the top all the time, the bibs just have the leather chamonix so I don't use those anymore.

I have the first pair of bib shorts I ever bought - 1986. Thin and not much pad, but they're still good enough to wear under tights in the winter.

I have a pair of shorts from about 1970.

Mostly I wear them for climbing where the thin fleece pad provides a bit of cushion when sitting on rocks.

Also a shirt that I sewed & wore on cross-country bike trip 1973. 60/40 cloth- remember that? Still works well.

Oh, and leather cleat shoes from pre 1970, but I don't really wear them & sold the bike that had toe clips.

My 30-plus year old Peugeot/Shell checkerboard jersey. Still wear it on every weekend ride.

I have a Campagnolo cycling jacket I bought maybe eight years ago or so. Has a few scuffs on it from a crash or two but all in all still functioning quite well.

Long-sleeve wool NEBC club jersey, circa 1983. Orange front and back with iron-on club lettering and blue side panels with Univega printing. It probably survived this long because on bare skin, combined with a layer of sweat, it acts like 400 grit. Still fits and is tolerable over a decent merino base layer.

Not really a clothing item, but I still use a steel pant clip that came with a new PX10 I purchased in 1972.

I just let go of my first pair of Shimano carbon road shoes. I can't say exactly how old they were but I know I had to have had them for at least 25 years, if not a few years longer.

Have no idea, but a request of those who keep shorts for a long time....Inspect them regularly. I see too much crack every year thanks to worn shorts. It happened to me back in 2002 on the first day of a week-long tour when a woman with whom I was riding politely said to me "You must have had those shorts for a long time." Took me a minute to figure out how a complete stranger could have possibly known that. At the end of the day's ride I inspected them after showering. Into the trash they went.

I have a thick pair of thinsulated woven wool (looking) gloves from the mid-late '80s. one nice thing about a glove addiction, you don't ever lose lose any. oops not cycling related, sorry

I almost forgot about my Detto shoes. Bought them in '85. They have the '84 L.A. Olympics logo on the side. I still wear them every weekend on my Saturday morning ride.

Wait! Are those socks from The Alt bike shop? Spent two days in Minneapolis while crossing the country in '99. Got a tune up and fresh tires from The Alt. Place was really accommodating, especially considering we'd likely never give them business again in the future.

Got you beat. I still have (and can still wear) my 1977 NEBC jersey. That year we did not have sponsorship so it was a simple green jersey with white sides and blue sleeves. Probably the same white NEBC letters as yours. Not remotely modern fabric but really well made and has held up beautifully except some fading. A lot of riding time! Jones Cyclewear.

An aside. Grace Jones of the clothing company and also the district rep for whatever US Cycling was called then was one of my angels after my head injury the fall that jersey was new. She was at the club annual dinner while I was in a coma. Over the next year of racing she was my biggest fan. Allowed me to upgrade to Cat 2 despite not enough points. (I was well on my way late '77 but the setback was so great I accumulated no more points in '78. I wanted to close out my racing on the Mt Washington road race but it was 1,2. Grace upgraded me in July so I could be ready for the race in September, then watched me get dropped in local 1,2 criteriums like a stone, sometimes drafting Lynn Lemair who would be TTing for her win in the women's race. The 1,2 pack would come and my workout would be over.

That year, the Mt Washington race was set up as a flat point to point from Nashua NH, 113 miles into a blustery NW wind to Conway. An acceleration that led to the winning break happened mid-way and I got dropped first. I stayed out in the road so the wheel van with Grace in the front seat couldn't pass me, caught the next rider and eventually a group of 5 of us got back on. I finished mid field after attempting a late break that went nowhere. (The winning break beat us by 15 minutes.) Grace got to see me one last time riding the Martha's Vineyard race just for the fun of it. Last time I saw her. Thank you Grace. I'll say hi when I go upstairs.

That's the one! Alternative Bike & Board Shop. We're big fans, we've been working with them for bikes and snowboards since around the time you found them. We've had/have 9 bikes, plus 2 classic bikes they rebuilt for us. And a full quiver of snowboards for me and our daughter - the two of us competed in The Alt's local snowboard series when she was growing up.

Small world. We rolled into town on a Friday morning and stayed at the Minneapolis International Hostel for two nights, which was about 1.5 miles from the shop. I think the shop was listed in the ride leader notes. Brought the bike in Friday afternoon and they did the work overnight so it was ready early Saturday. They even had the precise make, model and size of tire I had started the trip on. The guy who checked me out gave me a shop sticker (that's how I recognized your socks) and asked me to put it somewhere random during the trip. Ended up carrying it all the way home to Philadelphia and eventually sticking it on a lamp post.
