Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling kit - full kit vs separates

I'm finding that I prefer to have a matchy-matchy cycling kit. One where the jersey matches up with the bib shorts. The challenge for me is finding the right matching kit. Most of the matching kits I see for sale are from Tour de France teams and I'm not comfortable sporting a kit of Astana when I couldn't name one member of the team. Heck, I even have a kit for Bianchi and I don't ride a Bianchi bike and I feel strange wearing it...

Anywho...

Buying separates is easy enough to do and a simple solution to finding a good kit to wear. I just prefer a matching one.

What about the folks here? Any preferences? Or am I just too fussy?

My one and only velo is an '84 Peugeot I bought new. My kit consists of Detto shoes (they have the '84 L.A. Olympics logo on them) because I still ride with straps and cages, plain black bib or shorts and the jersey? Well, of course it's a checker board Peugeot jersey. What else could it possibly be?

You can get a matchy matchy kit from Voler. Check it out here: https://www.voler.com/browse/cat3/?cat=mens&ecat=z

I prefer black bibs and whatever for a jersey.

...that said, if you want matchy-matchy, one manufacturer to check out is Twin Six. They have a "commit to the kit!" deal and will discount matching bibs/jersey and they often have matching socks and even bottles.

+1 for black bibs and whatever jersey I want to go with it. I do have one matched kit, just patterned, I like it.

Waiting on new matching kits that should be here in a couple weeks, but those are for a team that I'm on. I wouldn't wear a team kit from a pro team or a team I wasn't on, but that's just me.

Lots of brands sell matching jersey and bibs. Castelli, Nalini, Pearl Izumi just to name a few. Now, if your looking for Team kits, well you may find sites that sell retro and other current teams just about any where. https://procyclegear.com/

Back in the day before I joined a team I would buy lots of clothing from PBK, when that's literally all they sold. It was really good stuff and I have to believe it really was surplus team kit.

The most matched I get is some navy blue bibs to match the navy on a few of my jerseys. Other than that is black bibs and a nice simply designed jersey (splurged on some Velocio kit last year that I absolutely love and I have a few more jerseys from them that should be arriving soon).

The Orion chamois pad is meh. I would go for the high density foam multi density 4 way stretch 6+ hour chamois. https://www.voler.com/browse/product/li/1110789. Considering your saddle sore issue, do no skimp on the chamois whether you buy Voler or other. All the clothes I get from my team have chamois selection or it is the best chamois that is offered by the manufacturer.

Nope. Plain black bibs or shorts, and mostly solid color jerseys with few or no logos or graphics.

But I'm tempted by that mid-'80s La Vie Claire kit.

I was tempted by that jersey for over 30 years, and I finally gave in.

I like matchy kit. I also like separates. One of my favorite combos is bib shorts with black/white patterns and a more subdued jersey. I'm a rule breaker.

Off the bike, I mostly wear black - it's kind of my thing. Bike kit is fun because I get to leave the house looking like a clown barfed on me, something I wouldn't do were I not road cycling.

The only thing standing between me and that Mondrian influenced La Vie Claire jersey is Bernard Hinault and his Paris-Nice punch.

If I can get some fool to distract Hinault I might be able to steal his jersey.

Most of my kit is separates, so black bibs and various jerseys. My club kit is matching. And my favourite set of kit is matching. But mostly black bibs, and a jersey.

Matchy matchy sure is fun to say. It rolls right off the tongue. Kit wise, black shorts and some kind of jersey. No high socks, either.

I cannot imagine Merckx or Hinault ever uttering the phrase “matchy-matchy.” Good Lord!
