Good prevention/treatment methodology & hygiene.
Modern kit, for those who have never had to endure the old hand washed & line dried woolen kit w/ a natural chamois in the shorts that had to be treated w/ a secret potion to keep it from turning to sandpaper, is one of the greatest "modern" improvements in cycling gear in my experience. I'll happily ride a fixed gear bike that would be recognizable to a club cyclist from 1939 for hours on end, but only in well fitted modern cycling kit.

I've rarely had to deal with saddle sores, even when I rode 12,000 miles per year. Had a pretty bad one once when I was trying different saddles a few years ago. Just lucky, I guess.
At 205 pounds this week, I am at least 30 pounds lighter than I was in high school but then I lifted weights 10 hours per week. My pant size is the same for at least 40 years.

Saddle sores aren't a fact of life if ride high mileage. I've had plenty of years well over 10,000 miles and have done hundreds of century rides. I was also very active for many years in ultra endurance cycling events. I have only ever had maybe two or three saddle sore issues in the 40+ years of riding. I live in New England and live on hills and play on a regular basis in the forth hilliest city in the US (Fitchburg). I've never used any butt butter/cream to help, but then again the correct saddle is extremely important.

It's more complex than that:

I know of another 72 year old who , if he were two pounds heavier or one half inch shorter, would fall into the obese category. He doesn't drink or smoke, but eats junk food and never exercises. He is also a self described genius

I walk like an old man, I run like an old man, I swim like an old man, but when I ride I am 12 years old again and I soar like a bird. That is why I ride.

Oh yeah, also, I like bicycles.

I listen to AC/DC and at times drink too much cheap Keystone Light. I’m a complete degenerate that just happens to like riding bikes

From my reading, “palatable” suggests acceptance, whereas “palpable” suggests revulsion. I think the context of the post by @BookFinder suggests revulsion.

BTW, I LIKED the post.

Hmm. Thank you men for catching that distinction (palatable vs palpable). When I posted earlier I was thinking obvious, but certainly not by any stretch acceptable.

How do you know, for sure?

I once posted about subscribers to the Fifty-Plus Forum:

Another change IMO is the seeming disappearance of self-identified females from those good old days. Miss Kenton, Miss Jean, and Beverly come immediately to mind as the Women of Fifty-Plus, since I have met them all in person.

I considered Miss K the doyenne of the Forum with her savvy and witty posts….
I will admit to being a (self-identified "cis") male.

So is your preferred word "palpable" (my choice) or "palatable?"

I rode from Seattle to Bar Harbor, ME, with a small group of people. The tour was totally self contained, with camping and cooking most nights. One of the participants turned 77 during the tour. He was a former member of the R.C.A.F. He spent two years in a Nazi P.O.W. camp. Once we reached Bar Harbor he started riding south towards his home in the Philly suburbs. Somewhere in CT his wife said "Enough!" and picked him up.

R.I.P. Stu. You had chunks of guys like the OP in your stool. And you were a humble man.

LOL. The banter in this thread sure sounds like men, no matter what they are denying or affirming!

My preferred meaning is that the arrogance was repulsive.

In reference to Post #62 above the OP would be highly advised to avoid riding any Zeus components.
No point in inviting Nemesis to do her thing, which would negate all of that "I do something every day that would kill most people if they tried it once."
That is what Icarus said right before "Hey Dad, Watch This!"

Flight Of Icarus: Iron Maiden. This thread reminds me of that song.

As the sun breaks, above the ground,
An old man stands on the hill,
As the ground warms, to the first rays of light
A birdsong shatters the still. His eyes are ablaze,
See the madman in his gaze.Fly, on your way, like an eagle,
Fly as high as the sun,
On your way, like an eagle,
Fly and touch the sun.Now the crowd breaks and a young boy appears
Looks the old man in the eye
As he spreads his wings and shouts at the crowd
In the name of God my father I fly.His eyes seem so glazed
As he flies on the wings of a dream,
Now he knows his father betrayed
Now his wings turn to ashes to ashes his grave.Fly, on your way, like an eagle,
Fly as high as the sun,On your way, like an eagle,
Fly as high as the sun.

For more on UberCyclists' self description of their superior bicycle riding skills/prowess on Super Daring Rides read: https://www.johnforester.com/LAW/Bikeway%20Controversy.htm

Excerpt:
I know of only one valid test of a sidepath system, my own. Palo Alto instituted its mandatory sidepath system along my route to work, which I had used for several years with no problems and no incipient collisions. After I had been convicted of continuing to ride on the roadway, I was hounded by bikeway advocates saying that this system had been instituted for the safety of cyclists and that my ill opinion of it was unfounded. Therefore, I decided to ride that system using the same speeds and right-of-way that I had enjoyed on the roadway. After all, if the system was safer, then it would be safer at the same speeds as before. Seven times in five miles I faced incipient car-bike collisions that I was able to avoid only by the combination of expert understanding of traffic with expert bicycle handling skill. Few other cyclists would have avoided any one of these. The cyclist who had observed part of the test was white-faced and incapable of speech when she met me at the end.

Just an example of another cyclist with an inflated ego and willingness to brag in print or online along the lines of the OP and "I do something every day that would kill most people if they tried it once." I didn't think it was that hard to see the similarities.
