Yeah, I don't focus on that stuff. Or worry about it. I may get bummed that some local crazy fast person has a KOM that I won't likely ever touch, but that's short lived.

I've been trying some stuff out when I can make it to the Tue/Thu hammer ride. Seeing what works and what doesn't. It's getting better. But, a few of us typically need to work more than others to keep the intended group pace. And that means I've only got one shot per week to try something fun, or mean spirited.

Taking a 5 days off the bike to go camping and hiking with my GF In Zion+Bryce NP - a perfect off season activity. I'm stoked and can't wait to hit the road tomorrow morning.,

For that reason I got up at 5:00 this morning and was out on the road before sunrise so I could get in 3+ hrs before work. Even though I'm a still a couple months out from training for 2019 for real, a part of me wanted to. When I was getting out of bed/getting ready, I was thinking "WTF are you doing dude go back to bed this sucks". But 30 min into my ride I was warmed up, there was enough sunlight to turn off my lights and the stoke factor was getting high, so all is well that ends well I guess.

Track workout at VSC last night with the 4PM gang. Tonight's warmup was super fast. I guess everyone is amped up for track worlds next month. After the warmup, I did a couple of jumps. My workout was with a partner with coach on the motor, race gears, pursuit bars 3x12 laps however every two laps the lead rider would back off the motor for 2 laps and then accelerate back on for 2 laps. My partner and I switched positions. After the motor work, I did a standing start. Fun session.

There really is beauty in desolation.

I actually rode my bike today! 2 hours, just social. Little harder than I wanted but donuts galore before and after.. so no complaints!

First run in quite a while, actually a run/walk, five minutes running/three minutes walking x3. The first two minutes of running were somewhat weird, the rest of it didn't suck. I'm switching to predominately running with some riding for the rest of the year, with a goal of doing my first half-marathon this December. Why the half-marathon? Because I've never done one, though I've run that far in training during college cross country season...49 years ago. This "decently-fit geezer" stuff is fun. I'll probably do some shorter trail runs/races in the meantime too. Another reason for the running is to increase bone density - I was diagnosed with osteopenia last year, I need the pounding to build bone.

Yup. My coach is a former Cat 1 roadie who transitioned to ultrarunning about four years ago. She's already coaching several pure runners. Needless to say, she's supportive of me emphasizing running in the near term. I have no plans to stop riding, I just want a break from the bike.

That sounds perfect. She knows you and can tailor a running program.

Sounds ideal. I've run a couple times this week. Feels good to go back to my roots and run again. On my thursday evening run I set out with no route and just to explore. It's cool the places you can find. I ran down this abandoned road next to some railroad tracks until it hit gravel and decided to turn back. I've also run on the Multi-use path system in my town and been places I never touch on my bike.

Holey gamoley. Rode a great trail today, Wire Mesa, around 30 min SE of Zion NP. Purpose built intermediate MTB trail, designed to teach, with alternate lines around difficult bits. And kind of an Intro to Slickrock, white dots painted on the slickrock sections to mark the trail but also delineate the best lines. Learned a lot and was riding almost everything by the time I was done. Liked it so much that after riding it clockwise, I turned around and immediately rode it CCW. Not a hugely physically taxing ride but I was for some reason pretty tired by the end. Probably it was the rocky stuff, I find that very tiring.

Possibly this is now my favorite trail anywhere.

15ish miles/1000ish ft climbing on 2.5 bottles water and 225 cal. Almost all HR zone 2 stuff.

Some kind of GCN video on the fluid yesterday. I put the meter onto the cross bike. The roadie needs a tiny bit of carbon repair, oops. But, the meter needed spaced out. The electrical tape holding the battery door shut rubbed the chainstay. THAT's why that felt so off.

5x3min today at lunch. Had been 6x3 with two sets, this was just one set. It's what the plan said, so that's what I did. Five in a row sucks more than three twice, in its own kind of way.

I really want a nicer home trainer that's a smart unit with some decent road feel. That fluid is just YUCK compared to the one in the gym.

Sometime this week with the weather breaking finally I'll go do my "dirty dozen hills of Raleigh" ride. Soft pedal between them, then hit it with what ya got for each one. I doubt any of the club riders will want to join for that one.

Yesterday was the gym. On the Stages bike for a recovery / warmup ride high cadence. Since cycling this weekend was harder, today was band walking, farmers carry and shoulders, chest and triceps. I had a coupon for a discount on a massage. So I scheduled a traditional Thai massage after the workout. I did international travel for work and spent quite a bit of time in Thailand and had numerous Thai massages.

I take off my clothes and put on the robe and head over to the spa. When I meet the therapist, a woman, she informs me that I have to put clothes back on. She asked me if I had ever had a Thai massage and I said yes, in Thailand where they provide clothes to change into. Thai massage does not use any oil so the therapist kneads the muscles versus rubbing them with oil. Fortunately, I had some dry not stinky workout clothes with me that fit bill sort of. This was total amateur hour considering the quality of the spa and what they are charging.

In Thailand, the massage is started by washing ones feet. She did not do that either. They did have the mat on the floor and once she got going, it was pretty good. The real reason I chose this therapist is that she did a demo in the gym on me and we talked about cycling and recovery.

She did a great job opening up my hips and stretching / massaging key groups that tighten up due to cycling. It was all good albeit, the spa needs to up their game.

I feel great this AM and its time to crush some efforts.

Season's over! I ended it with the Green Mountain Stage Race and felt that it kicked my fitness up a notch, so I've been taking advantage of it before backing off for a bit. I'm seriously thrashed right now, it's awesome and terrible.

On our ride this morning my training partner got annoyed that a guy on an electrified MTB was drafting us. We were just doing tempo and he just started to slowly ramp it up. We were doing 27-ish when we dropped him. Kinda ******y, but meh.

[on edit: wait the French word for shower is banned? Huh.]

Fiesta Island VO2 plus sprints. Hit a new power record for the seated start slightly uphill on my road bike 10 second duration - up 130 watts. This is sort of huge for me since it was identified last season as a weakness by my sprint coach. This time I changed up the VO2 work and did 2.5 minutes VO2 followed by 5 minutes of tempo repeat. My last race is Track Worlds in Carson the beginning of October. This is always a looooooonnnnnnnggggg season.

I took my SPO2 meter to Fiesta to see if there was any degradation in my O2 blood saturation during efforts. My results are equivocal. First, the sun was too bright to see the numbers on the meter without stopping, taking off sunglasses and shading the meter. Typically, I am 96 to 98% on this meter and 98 to 99% in the docs office on his meter resting. I checked SPO2 after warmup and it was 95% and after the VO2 and it was 95%. I am not sure if the value increased by the time I got the meter out of my pocket and on my figure and it took a reading.

When I was aero testing, I was talking with Manton about less O2 as the hip angle decreases. He suggested that we could test that using an SPO2 meter. Maybe the next time I test, we will try that case.

Been running and gym. Going to get around to a 2018 season analysis here soon. My lifts are progressing but have some form work to do on my squat and dead lift. Why are the most important lifts the ones that take so much more finesse..

How many reps are you aiming for with the squats and deads?

I lifted a bit in college and then for a couple months in summer of (2013?) and threw out my back from overuse. I was doing loaded sets of 5 reps and gaining strength fast, which was fun, but stupid. Gotta let those supporting muscles build up and focus on higher reps for cycling anyway.

Having said that I love doing those powerlifts, feels great. I'd like to get back into it at some point... Maybe I'll try soon! I'm thinking I'll focus on form and sets of 10-15 reps.

I'm on a full-on powerlifting plan. so its 4x6. Here is the link to the program I'm following. Goal is to just get stronger all around this off season. More for personal (aesthetic..) reasons than cycling performance, but being strong won't hurt, right?
