C&V car question.

Hey folks, what was the high performance version of the late-60s Dodge Coronet? 🤔 It has "RT" emblems in a couple spots, a hood scoop that looks factory-done, and several smaller touches too.
I saw this car yesterday, in Kingman, along with a "normal" '69 Coronet (which is what I learned to drive in, so got my attention, lol), as well as a drop-dead gorgeous '68 (I think?) Plymouth Barracuda. 🥰😎
Thanks. 🙂

R/T is just that, Super Bee was more of the same only different, these were Dodge specific on Dart, Challenger, Charger, Coronet, etc.

R/T was like SS on Chevrolet.

R/T = road/track, no "and".

So you mean more like "mid-range" performance? Like somewhere between Coronet & Super Bee? That would make sense.
I'm not sure what that R/T stands for, maybe Rally/Touring?
Either way, I love seeing these old cars, & just had to ask about this, or it'd drive me nuts, not knowing. 🤔😉
Thanks guys. 😎

Not necessarily, there were R/T Hemi and 440 Six Pack R/T cars that moved plenty of tonage with brutal authority and still do at dragstrips from coast to coast.

The Coronet 500 was the top of the line model in those years, that I'm pretty sure you could option up however you liked in the powertrain department. The Super Bee, on the other hand, was marketed more as an entry level muscle car, to capitalize on the success of Plymouth's Roadrunner concept. There was the 383 4BBL base engine, and initially the only engine option was the Hemi. Either way, trim and luxury options were limited, with the obvious intent of directing buyers interested in such to the higher priced Coronet 500 or Charger. I believe, after the 440 Six-pack was introduced, it was offered as a further engine option on the Super Bee.

R/T stood for Road/Track and IIRC was reserved for the Charger and Challenger, "Super Bee" was a play on Chrysler's designation for the mid-size cars like the Coronet which was "B-body". The Super Bee was Dodge's equivalent of the Plymouth Road Runner. This is my friend's 1970 Challenger R/T 440 Six Pak 4 speed car BITD, it only had 1700 street miles on it when the original owner turned it into a strip only car. He worked with the original owner and bought it from him. In this picture it was running a 383 instead of the 440. He had torn the 440 down and threw the 383 from his old race car in it so he could race that weekend. It did so well he stuck with the 383's the rest of the time he raced the car.

He later sold it to another friend who has since put it back to stock configuration, it still has the original interior, vinyl top and had no rust anywhere. Turns out it was the only '70 Challenger R/T 440 Six Pak painted silver with a black vinyl roof. He had it repainted and then found out there was a shop in Ohio that could remove the race car lettering and restore the original paint.

Since we're posting Mopars....

my hometown had a volunteer fire dept. if a fire broke out, all the firemen would high-tail it to the fire station from their homes or jobs.

There was a fireman up the street who had a mid-60s GTX just like the one pictured.

whenever the fire siren went off all the kids would wait for him to rip down the street at about 70 mph (in a posted 30). Made a lasting impression.

The Plymouth GTX has the distinction, in the first generation of muscle cars , that ended around 1973/1974 of not having any watered down, small displacement or low power variants. The standard engine was the 440 Magnum, and optional engines, depending on model year were limited to the 426 Hemi and 440 Six-pack.
