Roof rack got stolen

Hey Y'all,

I don't post much, but this morning I stepped outside to discover that my (Yakima) roof rack had been stolen. 2 Viper carriers, crossbars, fairing and 1 wheel carrier are gone. The only things left are the Q-clips and levers/covers of the Q-towers. The towers themselves are gone. The lock cores are still in the tower covers and were matched to the 2 vipers.

If you happen to meet anyone who has come into possession of 2 vipers + 1 wheel carrier + the new style fairing, but for "some reason" has no key or no lock cores (& no lock core "plug" where the locks should be) please drop me a PM.

Regards,
-kd

Sorry to hear of your loss.. Never worried about this possibility.. . Tell me it ain't so. Mine is a Thule system with a locking system. Would they not destroy the rack by violating the lock.. Hope so..

A friend here in LB had that same thing happen except the next night the dirtbags returned and stole the rest of the hardware.

It doesn't appear as though any sort of cutting tool was used- no metal shavings, etc. They separated the cam lever/cover from the rest of the tower. The result was that the covers + Q-clips are still attached to my car, lock cores and all. The rest of each tower (where the crossbars fit) is gone.

LBG, when/where was your friend hit? It could very well be the same person/people who have come up with a terribly efficient way to steal Yakima racks. If you prefer, we could take this to PMs.

I wonder if anyone will be trolling my street to see if I removed the remaining hardware?

A bike rack theft ring was broken several months ago, but it looks like it is happening again. Keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist and Ebay. I wouldn't be surprised if they appear there.

My wife's little mini cooper has this over engineered bike rack with a cheap locked shield over the nut that hold it to the car. Our garage got hit Easter morning and her car and 2 others' glass were broken and they took anything out of the cars. They were able to jimmy the covers off the nuts on the rack- but the over-engineered crapola kept them from stealing the rack as well.

Interesting, since that's a pretty decent area. I'm not too far from there. My street's pretty quiet, too- that's probably how the thieves like it.

My locked Yakima roof rack was stolen off my car in front of my house last night as I slept. The windows were open and I didn't hear anything that woke me up. I can't imagine how the thieves managed to get the locked rack off the car without damaging it. At least I didn't lose a bike!

That sux. Sorry for you. I'll keep an eye out in my area. And ... I'm removing my rack at night and when I'm not actually using it.

p.s. If you contact Yakima, it is possible to get a set of how many lock cores you need. You have to jump through some hoops when you ask for locks with a specific code, but you only need one key afterward. I have locks on everything, and to use my rack, they will need to either have a key or break the core lock.

I own a Yakima rack with the locks and all. Didn't realize that they could still be stolen. Not very reassuring...

That sucks, hate thieves. I wonder how many different keys Yakima produces, or is it a one key fits all?

Someone tried to steal my Thule T2 Hitch Rack. Fortunaterly it weas locked on. Often times these thieves will sell the rack piecemeal, or compbine parts with other stolen racks. Keep an eye on Craigslist.

Sorry to hear about this. Use CL or searchtempest too to look out for your bike rack.
