Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What if you could control a bike's shifting using only your thoughts?

Read the full article here:

Thinking about shifting? You already have. The Toyota Prius Project bike combines the forward-thinking innovations of the popular hybrid car, the carbon fiber sculpting of Parlee Cycles, and the computer engieering of the Deeplocal design firm to create a one-of-a-kind technological leap.

The idea was simple: by using off-the-shelf technology, could they design and build a bike that could be shifted only with the rider's thoughts? They combined a Dura-Ace Di2 drivetrain, a smartphone app and a brainwave-sensing helmet to make it possible. The drivetrain's electronic brain was wired to a wireless transmitter, and once the crew could make it shift with a smartphone, they kenw they were in business. It took a bit of practice with the neuron sensors to activate the derailleurs in just the right way, but it works. What's most amazing is that all of the technology demonstrated here is commercially available.

Imagine controlling a bike's brakes using only your thoughts on a winding descend. The future scares me.

Knowing the way my brain works I would drain the battery in like 10 miles with all the shifting.

Could work, I suppose. Although earlier mind-controlled things have been very difficult to use. You have to really think about it 'properly'. What if you're approaching a hill, and you start thinking 'sure would be stupid to shift to a heavier gear now', and you can't get yourself to stop thinking about it.

What I want is automatic gearing, that keeps you at a set cadence. Maybe a little LED on the handlebars to tell the rider that the system is just about to do a shift.

I'd control everyone else's shifting and brakes. It's the only way I could ever look fast.

99% of the guys here are total idiots. Shifting by thought process just doesn't seem like a smart way to go...

These are wireless right? If this goes mainstream maybe I can hack into someone else's system and shift for them.

*Guy drops me on an uphill. Bike suddenly shifts to highest gear. BAHAHAHHAHA

Heh. Sometimes when I'm trying to do higher intensity work I keep my hands away from the shifters and stay on a single gear, so that it takes too much effort to change hand positions and gear down.

This would completely ruin that.
