Is it safe to ride on this wheel?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is it safe to ride on this wheel?

I just noticed there’s carbon deformation on my rear wheel. I am told that it was caused by exhaust heat (I recently traveled and the bike was on the rack)

Is this wheel still safe to ride on? I put the bike on the same rack same position many dozen times and this never happened before. Maybe I never noticed it before but pretty bummed to see the wheel like this on top of other issues I have been having lately.

I wouldn't do anything without asking the wheel manufacturer. Contact Giant and ask them. If you are seeing that, the wheel got hot enough to soften the epoxy and deform the wheel.

Any more to the story? Sounds as if someone (shop?) explained what happened, did they offer an opinion? The only way I can imagine it would be safe is if the wrinkles are only in some cosmetic, tape-like layer. Probably only Giant could tell you.

Just for the sake of curiosity, can you feel the ripples?

Regardless, I can't imagine riding on a wheel that was heated to the point warped. That means its structure was weakened and changed...

My sister in law did that to an aluminum wheel. Burned the tire off and distorted the rim.

How would the wheel get that hot but the tire apparently is untouched?

Impressive the continentals survived this

I would ride these for commuting at 25kph

not descending at 90kph

another reason to buy EVs. ICE cars destroy bikes.

Or, you know, put the bike in the trunk.

That's just what I did. I will let you guys know when I get a response.

Yes, when I took the bike to the shop to get the hub fixed, a shop employee over there noticed it and told me it was OK to ride on. Well, I trust his judgment but I also like to get a second opinion on these kinds of matters. The deformation area is over pure carbon, not on tape like layer FTR. I contacted the Giant and expecting a response hopefully in the next few days.

Or get a better rack. I had been meaning to get one for a long time now will def get one before I travel with the bike again.

I had maybe 500 miles on the tires so yes they are fairly new.

Is that a carbon faring rim with a AL core or full carbon? If you take the tire off, is there shiny metal inside? If it's a faring wheel, I wouldn't sweat it.

Not a chance I’d ride on that wheel. I’m surprised it even remained true.

I'm a mechanic at a Giant shop--and I'd bet a considerable sum of money that Giant would not say that's safe at all. That's a full carbon rim and the layup is compromised.

Unfortunately the damage is not related to riding so it does not quality for Giant's Carbon Confidence program. If they have a replacement rim in stock you should expect to pay for it and a rebuild of the wheel or for a new wheel, which may or may not be less expensive.
