Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Where to get Specialized Propera helmet pads or substitute

I've got a year old Specialized Propero helmet and have been looking online at every store I know (plus Google and eBay) and haven't had any luck in finding pads in the US in stock, even on the Specialized website. Being bald, the worn pad's velcro is now scraping my head raw. My LBS is also looking.

Anyone have this problem before? I guess I could fashion something out of velcro (or duct tape) as a last resort, but it really sucks that a wearable part like a pad cannot be obtained on this continent (they have them in UK and Australia).

Contact Specialized directly. I have e-mailed them before about liners and they were able to sell me a few sets. In the meantime you can go to a craft/hobby store and buy some foam that you can custom cut to fit the helmet. They will stick to the hook and loop fasteners glued to the helmet.

My LBS (Montrose Bikes) used to keep pads for various Specialized helmets in stock. Have you tried wearing a headband or skull cap? I noticed my pads wear less (and stink less) when I do that.

Your helmet should have came with some smaller replacement pads. That's what I used, though they aren't as good at keeping the sweat from my face.

I checked Spesh's dealer site and it said "late September". Check their site for dealers and call around...you never know...some shop may have a set.

I have a Propero helmet. Echelon, Propero and S-Works share the same pad design. Unfortunately, they are not particularly sweat-resistant and delaminate easily. Replacement pad costs 10 bux or so and I simply bought a spare one when I got my helmet. In addition to having a spare I stitched the pad around the edge with the sewing machine.

Leg-shaving skills and sewing skills appears to be a package deal, don't you think?

Good Luck

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. I was out of town for a couple days. I don't know the roads around Beaufort, but there are great rides around Bluffton (Palmetto Bluff) and on Saturday morning there is a terrific 30 or 50 mile ride at Perry Rubber Bike Shop (North of Liberty on Bull St) at 8 AM (usually 75 riders or so that break into groups). It will take you about an hour to get there from Beaufort.

I'm riding solo early because I have to get to Hilton Head Island in the late morning for some golf. You can also check out a riding group in Bluffton called Kickin Asphalt, which has some routes on the website. https://www.kickinasphalt.info/calendar.html Good luck!

I use a cheap Bell helmet, and when the front pad came off I glued on a piece of old t-shirt. If anything, it's better than the old pad.
