What is a hybrid?
What is a hybrid?
I see in the other thread that even the wiki page is not clear on what a hybrid is.
I did a search in the hybrid thread to see if BF defined what a hybrid is, but I didn't find anything.
I'll bet this could be a hot debate...
but really, in my mind, it's so simple.
A hybrid is a mutt.
You know what a road bike is, right?
And you know what a mountain bike is, right?
If it's not a purebred roadbike, or a purebred mountain bike, then it's a hybrid!!!
Comments?

Aaaaargh ... nooooo! ..... Mikey, puleeease ... not this again Say it ain't so; just say you found the other thread on this Board from a year or so ago and thought you'd stir it up ... c'mon, just say it!
Cheers,
Badger ... owner of two 'hybrids' or whatever ... they're bicycle-mutts, frankenbikes, 'bikes for not-serious cyclists'(... a comment usually made by pudgy *Mamils on "crabon-fibre" [one of BSNYC's best quips] superbikes) ... whatever!

I'm not sure anymore, there are 5 different kinds of MTB now. I think we might be up to 6. Maybe even 7 if you count dirt jumpers. Given the MTB spectrum, I'd be tempted to lump XC MTBs in with hybrids
This next point reminds me of the Racial Draft on Chappelle show - what category gets the cyclocross bike?

Either or, neither nor... something that tries to do everything but nothing very well.
That being said... not bad
2011 Specialized SL2 Roubaix Comp
2007 Trek 7100

road racing bikes
TT/Tri bikes
road sport bikes
touring bikes
flatbar roadbikes (pretty much a hybrid class there, but in a grey area.)
There's even a criterium bike splinter seen from time to time.

Road bikes get split into "road performance" like Specialized Tarmac and "Road endurance" or "plush" like a Specialized Roubaix.
Road performance has a more agressive geometry compared to an endurance bike which as a longer wheelbase and a less
agressive geometry when in the drops.

( WOW ), what an eye opener ! What is a Hybrid has been a very heated debate on here, and probably was long
before my time. ( Can be fun though ) ! Laugh...Maybe Ken said it best, there are no real Hybrids', only Hybrid people
Would that be a Good thing or a Bad thing ? Richard!

Well if your not a road racer, an XC, Down hill, BMX, ( God knows I must believe that I am leaving out at least 20
different other styles. CycleCross, Etc...OOHHH !! Beach Cruiser ..You might be a Hybrid rider ! LOL..
I could not find the post you made, I think it was you, valiant effort on those small Block 700 x 38 c for that
trail ride. But was never going to happen ! Laugh. Here is a video of snow riding, ( but ) without the behind
the seen footage.
Did spend about four hours out riding that day, and what fun. I was pushing the bike and it seemed a little hard,
my Daughter says, your back wheel is not turning ! Duh !!! But to answer your question about all Hybrid Riders being
mutts, Not touching that one ! Richard

The MTB categories I frequently see are:
Dirt Jumpers/Urban MTB
XC
All Mountain/Trails
Freeride
Downhill
And then there's the Niner segment.
Trials bikes aren't widely produced, mostly custom jobbers but often resemble Dirt Jumpers.
