Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Awesome ride today, for the most part anyway. 135k. Mostly flat. Weather started out cloudy, then some light rain that managed to get everything wet and create a nice paste of dirt to grind the drive train. Then sun came out and it was a brilliant day. All in all no complaints.

It's winter here in Tasmania, AU so there hasn't been much cycling. But we're enjoying watching the Tour de France. We rode our trainers for 30 minutes while watching the end of Saturday's stage!!

Saturday - 50 miles on the wonderful Davidson. Did several pseudo-sprints during the ride with one go for broke one that was too slow, sigh. Good pace for the distance considering everything. I always enjoy my time on this bike.

Sunday - Another 50 miler but with the legs still a bit tired I decided to punish them more and headed up one mountain for a short climb. Stopped a few times to take pictures. This was the first ride on the Paletti since putting on a new set of Zonda wheels. The wheels made it feel much more responsive despite my tired legs.

Big whoop-de-doo club ride from the sports store sponsor.

Pre & post ride food & even beer!

Managed to hang with the fast group (of three) so maybe the price for my slacking is not too high.

55, 3,100' hot, no water stops.

The guy in the front is over 70.

The Upper Midwest is heatin' up, and I'm recovering from a little injury...so no big miles this weekend. I did get to test out my new aero road bars, which are pretty awesome!

Friday: Easy ride to see how everything was feeling...30.5 miles, 1,289'.

Saturday: Tried to hammer a bit on a favorite short loop around southeastern Minnesota. The climb was sluggish and I wimped out a bit on the descent; it was nowhere near my best solo time on the course, but I was happy with the very reasonable 18.2 MPH average. 25.3 miles, 1,010'. I stopped for pictures...

67 miles with approx 1200 ft climbing. Haven't been riding much for the last few weeks due to other commitments so felt it pretty good when I got home. Nice to get in a decent length ride.

Saturday did my usual Picnic to Davis Is. ride for 42 miles. Sunday I rode to Weedon Is. and back with a few extra miles for another 42 miles. Brutally hot right now.

18 miles Friday (well, 24 if I count 6 mile commute to and from physical therapy), mostly testing out new Wahoo sensors on one road bike. Seemed to work.

And nearly an unintentional metric century Sunday, 60+ miles total. I set out only to ride to a friend's home to deliver a birthday card (I got the date wrong, again!, and didn't have time to mail it). It would have been a leisurely 14 mile round trip.

But I stopped by the trailhead to refill my water bottles, bumped into some friends I hadn't seen for awhile, and we did another 50 miles. Fun, but I'm pooped today. Those guys are stronger than I am, and we were on their home roller coaster turf, a route with lots of short, steep, punchy climbs.

It's interesting watching how differently people tackle climbs. One friend is a somewhat big guy, 6' and around 185 lbs and in good shape. The other is around my weight, 150 lbs and a little shorter. The bigger guy climbs out of the saddle a lot, mashes instead of spinning, alternately doing a ragged cadence around 40 rpm and coasting, and doesn't seem to get tired. He's done a zillion century rides, including in 100+F summer heat, so his style works for him. He also owns or owned a lot of local KOMs from 6-8 years ago when he was actively chasing Strava stuff. If I had his engine I'd be doing masters racing.

The smaller guy mostly spins but also climbs out of the saddle some. His cadence is unlike anything else I've seen, other, perhaps, than Jacques Anquetil. He prefers full leg extension, almost straight, and has a smooth pedaling style. He has a ton of KOMs and top tens everywhere he rides, and seems to get stronger all the time despite being in his 50s.

I prefer to sit and spin, and keep up pretty well although it's more aerobically demanding. I practice standing to climb on my own, but it always wears me down quicker. I've been dropped on some group rides when I made the mistake of cooking my thighs too quickly by standing to climb. If I sit and spin even if I get out of breath I can recover quicker and catch up.
