Wet spots on tubeless tyre - what to do?

In looking over my rear tyre tonight I noticed maybe half a dozen or more small wet patches/spots on my tyre. I am running a tubeless setup, with Orange Seal. The tyre is holding air, although the tyre is throwing a few cords here and there.

Should I be concerned about this? If so, what steps should I take? Thank you.

New tire I think is the correct answer... tubeless set up or not

That thing is toast.

I mark and patch any visible holes when I replace sealant or rim tape. The Park Tool self-adhesive patches work great. But yeah...you need a new tire...

Wet spots don't necessary mean the tire is done-- I had Maxxis tires that would weep sealant from the first week. Cords showing though... new tire time.

Tire is near end of life. If the cords showing are in the middle of the tread, new tire NOW. If tread intact over
entire tire, then it is likely you could get maybe 50-200 more miles out of the tire, as long as it held air. But it
should be inspected before every ride for bare patches in the tread. I always remember an acquaintance
who noted a single tiny bare spot on a tire before a century ride that had to get a ride back as the tire flatted and
inspection showed many inches of bare carcass all around the tire at about the 70 mile mark.

Thanks everyone. I should have been more clear. Cords are not showing, but coming off the tyre where tyre meets the rim. Kind of like long strands of hair. If that makes any sense.

But if it is new tyre time, that works too. I have a new one in waiting.

It is probably looking like a new tire. However those wet spots are likely the sealant doing its job of sealing.

No brainer. Time for a new tire. Waste of time trying to prolong the life of that one

I borrowed a tubeless set up wheel when my clincher wheel was in the LBS for a wheel true. I had a thorn go in on my commute the following day, pulled it out and it sealed. I had another wet spot when I got home, wiped it off no drama. Got to work the following day and the wet spot appeared in the same place. Curiosity got the better of my and I plucked out a small shard of glass. Even though the hole had sealed originally the external pressure of the road was still pushing the shard into the tyre thus breaking the seal. Once the object was remove no more wet spots.

Cords/threads coming loose at the rim-tire junction are common and no cause for concern. Just cut them off as close
to the tire as possible and carry on. With tread intact otherwise, just check entire tread every week or so or every
50-100 miles for bare carcass as tire is approaching EOL. Wet weather riding or daily rides will increase the risk
of punctures with an older tire with thin tread but as long as it holds pressure and tread covers carcass I would ride
it but maybe not on a ride out in the boonies or a very long ride.

Wet Spots

mean the sealant is working. Your tire does seem worn, but I just mounted some new Pirelli Cinturatos and got a puncture the first week. Had wet spots and latex all over the rear fork.

Without the knowledge that there are wet spots or threads showing, I would still say that tire is done. Obviously very many miles. It doesn't owe you anything at this point.

Thanks everyone. I have 5,000km on the tyre so I guess the tyre doesn't owe me anything. Although I was hoping to get between 7,000 and 8,000km out of the tyre. Guess I was little overly optimistic there eh?

I took the forum's advice and replaced the tyre tonight.

I recently purchased as set of Veloflex Corsa EVO Black Sidewall tubeless tyres that I've been wanting to try. So now those tyres are mounted on my bike and I'm looking forward to giving them a spin. Cheers.

sch Thanks for the feedback on the cords. I wasn't sure if that was part of the tyre wearing out or just the way the tyre is.
