Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is that reasonable? Seems kinda risky to this landlubber. He has a history of TBI and slightly impaired judgement, although it’s generally well compensated.
I think he's been drinking his bathwater, and will soon be drinking seawater and swimming with the fishes.

I would need more details about his sailing CV, the plan, and the boat, but all kinds of fools cross oceans successfully in unsafe boats and bad things happen to the best prepared. On the TBI and judgment issue, I spent several years working with frontotemporal dementia patients and my and my collaborator’s attitude on activities was, as long as it doesn’t endanger anyone else’s life or property and the family understand the risks, go for it. With sailing there is always the issue of the expense and risk to SAR assets in case of disaster, but my strong feeling is that SAR is a normal activity and that the people who do it live and train and love to do their thing and would be very sad Indeed if mariners stopped taking risks.

No gin on the boat for multi-day cruises; too much temptation to drink every night and booze and end of the day dehydration are a bad combo. Instead, small amounts of wine or vermouth with seltzer and a squish of citrus.

So I’m thinking of getting a direct drive trainer... trying to decide between an Elite Direto XR, Kickr, H3, or Kinetic R1 (I know it has crap reviews but love the rock n roll) any thoughts?

My H1 is great; until I killed the belt it was dead reliable and Saris support was good. The Kickr(1) I had was less good in basically all ways, including reliability, and they’ve had more issues since. Unless you want to use the rest of the Wahoo system I’d go with the H3, and a rocker plate separately if that’s important. The motion isn’t worth inaccuracy.

really digging the reconstituted bike but why didn't they put a horizontal stem instead of that upward angled abomination. Maybe I'll replace it with a horizontal crabon one. Prolly only cost about $50 and i'll save weight.

Reminds me: Riding Monday I saw an 84 Lumber truck. Not too surprising, as I was passing the 84 Lumber store. But this one had a Pennsylvania license plate. What are the odds?

84 lumber is from 84 Pennsylvania so not surprising at all. 84 is South of Pittsburgh in Washington County, i believe. Been through there many a time BITD. #TheMoreYouKnow

I've never heard of 84 Pennsylvania. Is that near Pittsburgh?

Thanks man, H3 and Direto are the top 2 right now. I may consider the Neo 2T but it doesn’t seem worth the extra cash

People talk it up, but even the new version appears to be less reliable and accurate about delivering the training load to your legs, for a 40% price premium. That’d get you a premade rocker plate for the H3 (right now I just have mine on a squishy pad which lets it rock a little).

When I was a ute 84 Lumber was the closest lumber store to where we lived and I got hauled in there a few times. I kind of wonder how it survives these days with Home Depot/Lowe's being so much bigger and not that far away.

Something has been pooping on my back deck. I think it’s a raccoon. A house behind me has a grape vine that they like. Before my trip I heard one in the yard directly behind mine a couple of nights.

I have an original Direto that has been flawless and it took the place of my Kinetic R&R. Not going back. I had to return the first Direto as it failed to actually produce resistance after a week, but the replacement has been great. The Saris models are also highly rated, and honestly, I don't think the Neo is worth the money unless you are going to be using the hell out of it.
A rocker plate would be a nice upgrade too. I looked into it, but have not done anything with it. Yet. Maybe this will be the year.

What's a healthful amount of nuts to eat? I've been generally eating a handful of mixed nuts a day. #Nutrition
