33 miles on the Olympic Discovery Trail. Not a lot climbing, but it took a lot out of me; I'm really out of shape. A nice section between Lake Crescent and Forks, WA. Forgot to put my water bottle on my bike, but didn't really need it for that short distance in <70 degree weather.

Crossing the the Sol Duc river, lovely as always. Didn't see any spawning salmon or steelhead, but may have been too early or late for that.

A secluded nook off one the forest Service roads out there. (Honestly, just needed a private place to pee)

Oh, my, it is bird hunting season out here, too. I did notice a few fat, male grouse rising from the trail as I passed by; but as I had not the forethought to pack my fowling piece on this trip, I returned with nothing in my bag but a few empty granola bar wrappers. The dearth of severed wings and tails in the white trailside barrel attested to the similar poor luck of other trail users recently.

I flipped the wheel on the Bates and put in 36 miles fixed. Cranston-West Warwick-Coventry. Super fun!

Near the turnaround in Coventry

There were some turkey sightings, but I didn't get great pics.

Can you see it?

The bike path goes along part of the Pawtuxet River and the Flat River Reservoir.

Thanks, it was kind of overcast. When I was next to that mill (West Warwick?) an elderly gentleman was taking some digital photos and was complaining about the lighting. I was just glad it wasn't raining!

Quick ride downtown to vote today. I’ve been down a couple times but the crowds haven’t tapered off. Sucked it up and got in line today.

Just down to Seward Park. The experiment with the well used Brooks Pro and Victory pedals on the Falcon didn't last. Went back to the old Turbo and japanese KKTs. Ahhh, comfort...

I took the newly completed 1959 Olmo out on a foggy morning, looking for some dirt and gravel to try out my new Veloflex Vlaanderen tires.

My bike was happy to see this reminder of its birthplace.

The pines of Tomales Bay State Park are beautiful in the fog.

I never rode a B-17 narrow before. It worked out just great.

At last my destination. Unfortunately a road crew got there before I did and were laying down a new surface layer. The road grader was hard at work smoothing everything out but the compactor had not yet packed down the fluffy base rock. I sank in hopelessly unless I hugged the very edge of the road that hadn't been covered with the new material.

Right after I made this discovery the grader came back for another pass, covering my small rideable strip with a layer of fluff. Time for me to go home. By now I'm sure it's nicely compacted and a joy to ride. Good for another adventure!

A dirty bike is a happy bike.

obrentharris I did a mostly gravel ride today on the Heron and also early on ran into road grader work with the same kind of loose dirt. I pressed on and luckily work only lasted less than a mile. I have dreams of living near Tomales Bay btw.

Did about 21 miles, all but about 2-3 of it gravel. Explored a new road. I was a little out of sorts after a couple of hard days at work and some sleep disruption. As usual, riding set me back to rights. I’ve gotten use to the nice scenery on my rides for the most part but I still regularly get “wow” moments And today had a couple. The cell phone camera doesn’t capture the expanse and I was kicking myself for not throwing the DSLR in the bag today.

No problemo!

We've had a very mild Fall so far in this part of Virginia. Been cool at night, but no cold snaps/frost yet, so the leaves haven't turned much- at least not the red ones.
Some on the ground from the early droppers- decorative cherries, Plane and Linden trees.
But as you can see, still pretty green in Virginia Hunt Country:

Cruising with one of the ‘endurance’ frames, aka = French fit. ‘83 Puch AD Vent Noir

Enjoying Fall’s fresh rides, especially on the regular routes.

VeloflexVlaanderen makes road surfaces almost disappear.

66 miles up into Lake County. A chunk of "Delta" came though and dropped the temp 15 degrees during the middle of the ride, but then rebounded.

Great fall day and the color is really popping!

I got out for a solid 65 today with a fair bit of climbing. Only one quick pic, but it was beautiful riding in nice temps. Lovely time of year.

Funny enough after a couple mentions here, I have a set of Vlaanderen tubs to start gluing up tomorrow for another bike.

At about 190#, I prefer my Vlaanderen tire pressure around 95psi. Yeah I could run them softer, but I would have no road feedback, and greater rolling resistance. The advantage of flexible sidewalls is high pressure without harshness. My 30mm Sdhwalbe tubies require much lower pressures to be as smooth.

Spent a day exploring the Fairfax County Cross County Trail. This has been in development for decades and consists of existing MUPs linked by connectors, park trails, housing developments and newly paved (some concrete, some asphalt) bike/hike/walk trails. It literally goes from one end of the county to the other, although you have to figure out some of the connections and the signage ain't all that great.

But you get a lot of this:

And some of this:

All while trying to figure out exactly where the heck you are relative to the road system. For example, within a mile or so of this is the highly trafficked 95/395/495 corridor.

This is not far from the Rt.50/495/Inova Hospital complex (it's so big that they took over the old Exxon corporate headquarters campus)

Plus, you get to ride around Lake Accotink, which was originally built a century ago as a reservoir for Fort Belvoir& then rebuilt and enlarged as part of the WW2 war effort:

Two rides of note recently. On Friday, I did a fairly typical ride up to Lake Forest. As I mentioned I think in an earlier ride report, Forest Park has a team of robotic lawn mowers. They were going Friday and I decided to take a picture. I caught him just after he encountered the gravel path and turned around. I was just about to turn around and head home as well. 'Twas a good reminder.

On my way back though, I took a slightly different route out of Lake Forest and stumbled upon the Walden-Bluff's Edge Bridge, the former entrance to Cyrus McCormick's country estate, Walden. (Older peeps will probably remember McCormick as the inventor of the reaper. Whether or not this is still taught in school, I have no idea.)

It seems the bridge was saved by the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation in the 90s:

I'm always amazed at how readily many people are to demolish historical structures of various kinds.

Yesterday, a few (non-vintage) bike friends and I rode the route of the 1919 Chicago Race Riot Route to help raise funds for Blackstone Bicycle Works. Two of the people I was riding with had copies of the guide book (I understand they are sold out), so we were able to get a bit of detail of the significance of each of the markers. Here my partners are in an obviously unstaged photo at the old Union Stockyard Gate:

The route also passed by Illiniois Institute of Technology, home to a number of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's buildings (Mies chaired the Department of Architecture), all of which still stand. Here's a fly-by pic of the CTA Green Line running through the student center:

I'm going to have to make a point of visiting and checking out the architecture.

I'm really enjoying the fall colors in all the posts in this thread. That's the one thing I miss from when I lived in Georgia. We're still waiting for fall to show up here. It's still above or near 100° every afternoon.

I headed for the wide open spaces east of town this morning, about 40 miles total.

Got short last snow free ride in today just around town for bit before it snows . it well likely be the last snow free ride this season so in for the next 6 months or so expect to see mostly white from ride pics. Took the Hardrock which I just found a nice WTB vintage velociraptorr rear tire for to match the front . So I'm set for snow cold .
