For road and gravel bikes there was some interest a couple of years ago due to smaller chainring options. AFAIK that has faded since Shimano came out with GRX.

I have them on my MTBs and love them. They help on steep, loose climbs by making the power transfer a bit smoother. I want to try one on my road bike but, I can't get past the looks...

I run their 46/30 rings on my road/gravel bike because as shelby pointed out at the time it was the only option. I've ran oval on my mtn bikes before as well. I'm one of those people that can't tell any difference. So far they are holding up fine as you would expect with only around 1k miles on them.

Tried it on my MTB and liked it. From there I put it on the road bike and from a pedaling perspective, I liked it too. It may merely be a placebo of me buying into the theory behind why they bring an advantage.
That being said, I couldn't get the shifting to my expectations, particularly shifting from the smaller ring to the bigger ring. I ended up going back to round, as I found myself constantly worrying about whether the bike would shift properly on any given moment. And that's that. Had I been able to get it shifting to expectations, I would have kept the ovals....I don't feel I have lost anything going back to round. I think it's more mental for me.

I just pulled a set from a DA9000 crankset, and a 50T from an FSA crankset, both bought used.
The 34T shifted better to a round 50T. I ride in a hilt area and some like the 34T for climbing.
