Help..any alternative to this BB?

Hi everyone, I’ve tried searching everywhere with no luck so decided to finally post here. I’ve got a GT mtb which has the Hollowtech 1 (Octalink?) Deore Triple crankset. There’s play and its rough while turning. LBS says I’ll need the cartridge unit Shimano BB-5500 70 36x24T.

Problem is its like finding a needle in a haystack and most searches lead to the *105 road* version. So I’m at a wits end and apparently the BB-25 version is a later version which wont fit as well.

i guess what Im asking is does anyone know whether there is an alternative product code I should be searching for or any other compatible BB out there? Doesn’t have to be Shimano..
thanks

Shimano Octalink . now? No..

ISIS was a more open source spline BB , if the cranks were ISIS Spline there's these ..

Did you remove the arm? On my hybrid the Deore "hollowtech" is square taper.

If it's octalink you need to know if it's V1 or V2. You also need to know what your BB shell width is 68 or 73mm as well as your spindle length.

The bike shop's suggestion of BB spec doesn't seem right to my experience. GT's typically had 68 or 73mm wide BB shells (not 70mm) and the threading was always 1.37"x24tpi, common ISO/English/JIS. Not the Italian 36x24...

The time tested way to figure this out is to remove the current BB and measure/test fit to determine the best replacement. Be aware of falling into the ditch of claims when this actual work hasn't been done. Andy

I agree with Andrew that there is little to no chance that a GT needs an Italian threaded bottom bracket.

Hmm..now that you mention it, he did say that he hadnt opened it but just asked me to supply a BB as the picture. But a 2nd LBS did open another GT of mine whose BB definately wobbled and said its hard to find.

You have a point, guess I’ll hv to dive in and open it and order based on whats inside. It’s definitely not square taper..

Oh..and much thanks for the quick replies. Experienced answers was what I was looking for. If indeed its 1.37” or 68/73mm ones its much easier for me to source.

You can measure the width of your BB shell and find out if it's 73 or 68mm.

Many times, if it's not in their "supply chain", it basically doesn't exist to them.

My 2 LBS's don't order over the internet, so often, you can get the needed part much easier yourself.
I've ordered parts that weren't in stock and it's taken 2-6 weeks by the time it went to the main office and processed. I think they wait until the page is full before they order?
