So i have a 2009 Giant Seek 2. I really love this bike for cruising through the city. I had a fixed gear for many years but wanted to get something a little more versatile.

So its currently a 24 speed and that is just too much for me, so i am converting it to an 8 speed. I have already disabled the front derailleur and locked it in place to keep the chain on the 38t chainring.

However, for pure aesthetic reasons, I would like to replace my crankset and put one on that can have just a single chainring.

MY question is how do i know what types of cranksets are compatible with my bottom bracket?

Why not just remove the inner and outer rings, derailleur, and cable? Use a Paul's chain keeper to keep the chain in place, or maybe chainguard/n-gear jump stop.

Or you could leave all that stuff on and enabled, and just not shift. All shifters will stay in place once set.

That was totally what i wanted to do, but the crankset is held together with rivets instead of bolts, so im not exactly sure on how to remove the extra rings. Same with the derailleur, i would have to open the chain to get the derailleur off (though i dont have a huge problem doing that).

Are you sure about that? They don't look riveted.

Yeah.

it looks like it is bolted from the picture, but that is just the way the rivets look. I got up and personal with it yesterday trying to figure a way to get them off.

Cartridge bottom brackets can be had cheap I would get the one that goes with whatever single crank you get. Probably ly only an extra 20 or 30

well i found the solution.

Shimano Alfie S500 Crankset

It is the crankset they use on the Seek 0. Its a single chainring set up and comes with the correct BB.

Got it for 111 bucks.

Now you can get an Alfine 8 speed hub.

Yeah no doubt. But the guy at the shop said it wouldn't fit my seek 2. I'm not giving up hope though.
