On the subject of laptops, I'm seriously considering this one, with 4 gig of RAM, and the 500 GB 7200 rpm hard drive. Do any of you laptop gurus have an opinion on it?

Also, what is so desirable about SSD? It seems like a lot of money for very little storage...

Lady Gaga doesn't need a slap, she needs to be ignored. Beiber needs to be buried alive.

Yes he is..one of the greatest victories over pop culture that my wife and I can claim with our kids is their utter disdain for the likes of Miley Sirus, Justin Beiber and pop music in general. When they ask to listen to the Beatles or Zep rather than Miley I feel like I've scored a little victory over mediocrity. As for their current musical interests the Muse is at the top of both of their iPods.

Nothing special. You can get a name brand with the same specs in the same ballpark.

For linux, system76 is a name brand. Thanks for looking, though.

Both my daughters are stuck in the top 40s rut no matter what I do to try and open their ears to better music.

My son wanted to buy a Justin Beiber book from his schools book sale. I had to explain to him the fact that it was targeted to tweener girls and he had never even heard the kids music. He recognized the name from all the girls in his school who are infatuated with him.

music is not what it once was.

by this I mean it has taken on a new role in society, and part of that is to define arbitrary "generation gaps".

Each generation has a specific spectrum of music that it is associated with, and at any one particular time there are different subsets of popular music that are "targeted" at specific age groups.

This is not how it always was. In fact, it's a very new development in the history of music. If you look for examples of music from the past you can find:

1. concert or "serious" music
2. folk music, mainly for dance or balladeering
3. nursery music / young children's songs

conspicuously absent would be "music for teenagers, or music for "young adults" or music for any age-group other than little kids. (and not much of it)

In fact, I cannot find evidence that teenagers had a social structure of their own until well after public schooling was introduced.

This kicks in my Ga Ga antibodies:

Beiber's just another tiny dicked media created nothing that'll go be gone soon.

On the other hand after this I have to say I'll give Katy the benefit of the doubt. Pet the kitty Katy.

My daughter was singing a Bob Pollard tune the other day and my soul lit up....hope has been rekindled.
