Last summer when I was living in Wellington, FL I met an older guy who occasionally came to my shop's Sunday morning ride on his fixed gear bike when he was up from Fort Lauderdale visiting relatives. I was amazed how he kept up with our road bike B group on his bike with only one gear. It got me interested in riding fixed myself and since we were about the same size and I really liked his chrome-plated bike I asked him if he would sell it but he turned me down. I stopped going to those rides soon after so did not see him again.

Well, I moved to Ft Laud a few months ago and guess who I ran into? That same guy lives in the building next to mine. When I ran into him he turned me on to several rides in the area and guess what else? He is riding a new bike and offered to sell me his old frameset.

Sorry for running on but I've come to the gist of my post. He is asking $300 for the frame, fork, and headset, and seems pretty firm on his price. There are no scratches or marks on it, looks practically new due to the plating which turns out to be nickel, not chrome like I thought. He has lots of other nice parts that he says he will let me have for "good prices", will help me shop for anything else I need to finish the bike, and will help me put it together. I have been riding road bikes for years and whenever it needed work just handed my bike over to my shop, said "fix it", and paid when it was done so this is all new to me.

Does the forum think this frame is worth $300?

But then again it can only be worth anything close to $300 if it's something special and not the run of the mill steel frame we see here.

i think he's lying to you. if it were a brother frame. he would have said that in the first place. looks like something you could get at bikeisland. someone please correct me if i am wrong.

Looks like a lugged Maxway frame. Probably is, if not something near-identical.

It's a nickel-plated SE Premium Brew (manufactured by MaxWay) that was being sold by Bike Island a couple of years back for around 200 bucks.

Need more info. You can buy an Eighthinch crmo frameset with headset and seat post for $150 new:

Without any more details it's hard to say. But I don't think there are many used steel framesets that would be worth spending $300 on

Hell no that's not worth it for a used frame. If you want a chrome bike, you can buy a complete kilo tt chrome edition on bikesdirect for 449, or you can but a chrome Jury frameset on bikeisland for 254.

I don't get any of the side-talk that's been going on but do appreciate the few bits of real information.

When I talked to my neighbor about the frameset yesterday he said that he had told me explicitly it was made by Maxway, guess I was not paying attention. Then when I told him I was checking it out in this forum he let loose with a very derogatory tirade about this place. Since I am not a regular here and want to stay in good standing I won't quote him.

After I got the Maxway name, thanks seau grateau and Scrodzilla, I was able to dig up quite a bit of info on it, much of it from right here. Apparently this frame is, or was pretty well thought of, that Bikeisland place used to sell it for $300 but not anymore, some major manufacturers used it in some of their bikes, it is indeed the same frame as the one that Kinoko Cycles is currently selling for £345.00 (only theirs is painted instead of plated), and Maxway is still producing it:

So basically, I have to decide whether I am willing to pay my neighbor $300 for his with maybe a few parts thrown in. He swears that even used (the plated finish does make it look practically new) this frame is far superior to any similarly priced framesets that i would likely find on my own. I like the vintage-style lugs & quill stem headset, & love the nickel-plating.

Guess I have some serious thinking to do, thanks again any help.

Having lugs at this point is just a style thing, which is totally cool. Ride something you like. But it is not a sign of quality in any way. That frame is a very generic entry level steel fixed gear, that is styled pretty well.

MaxWay definitely makes decent quality frames. Along with the low BB I mentioned earlier, that particular frame has pretty relaxed road geo - as well as routing for dual derailleur cables on the bottom of the BB shell (as odd as that may seem).

And yes, I've owned and ridden one.

Some BB shells come with cast-in cable routing. Too much bother to grind them off when building the frame, I guess.
